Another Problem with 30G iPod
« on: August 31, 2007, 01:40:22 PM »
Hey All,

I found Rockbox on Cnet.com. I thought it looked cool, so I downloaded it. I had everything working well until I picked up my Pod this morning. I'm getting the "Sad Face" error screen. I've read a bunch of postings and followed the instructions exactly.

1. Reset the iPod (Check)
2. Get Pod into Disk Mode (Check)[I failed quite a bit at this, but finally got it THX to GodEater]
3. Connect Pod to CPU (Check)
....

At this point I'm waiting for iTunes/my comp to recognize that it's connected. Unfortunately, the black screen/silver apple comes back up and brings me back to the error once again. Suggestions, please??

Your iPod could be suffering from a hardware failure of some sort at this point. You may have to contact Apple regarding this matter.

But to make sure, since you watched the video: you DID read the manual before you started the installation process, I hope?

Yep... I got warned about that from the Cnet Video. I was playing a bunch of games yesterday on RockBox and Listened to Podcasts using the Apple software on the way home. Everything was going well until today.  :(

If your iPod is still under warranty, take it to an Apple Store (or wherever you got it from), and ask for a replacement.

I don't think they'll notice the Rockbox firmware if the iPod is just Sad Facing right off the bat.

More often than not, the trouble "newbies" get with their first time with Rockbox, is not realizing QUITE how bad the battery life is. They run their ipod allllll the way down, and then it looks like it's dead.

That being said - I don't think I've ever seen the "Sad face" image - so not sure what that's supposed to telling us. I'll have to have a hunt on Apple's site to find out.

The "Sad Face" image means "Bring it to apple for service." But it can also simply mean "The firmware partition is corrupt, boot into disk mode and restore your iPod" if I recall.

Apple's site recommends this page if you have a sad face on your ipod :

Actually, it does mean either or. My dad's iPod started giving him a "Sad Face" about 3 months ago, and it turned out to be a hardware failure; the hard drive died. After replacing it and restoring the iPod (and Rockboxing it!), it works just fine now.
