How do I sync music? (was: newbie question - sorry)
« on: August 30, 2007, 08:52:49 PM »
So now that there is RockBox, what do I use to sync music? Still ITunes?  Also, where are my photos on my iPod now?  I am trying to find them but am sort of lost in what used to be the hidden directories.  If I use something else to sync my music, can I use something else to sync my pictures or are pictures now history with RockBox?

Sorry to be slow, I am having a blast with the WPS's and various themes, but I still would like the picture ability of iTunes.

You can still use iTunes to sync music if you wish, but you'll need to make sure to initialize the Database before you can access your music.

As for your pictures, you'll have to copy them into another folder on your player. Make sure they're in JPEG format so the JPEGviewer plugin can read them.

Thanks very much for not bashing me for asking a stupid question.  I just ran a search on the forum and figured as much.

Do I also preconvert all my pics to the 320X240 resolution?

There's no real need to. JPEGviewer will scale most pics to a size that looks good on your DAP's screen.

If you want to still also use the OF, then yes sync music with iTunes and ue the database in Rockbox.  If you don't want to use the OF, then just drag and drop you music onto your player anywhere you like (although in the .rockbox directory is a bad idea).

For pictures (jpgs) copy them anywhere you want on the player.

I'm sure someone will be along to say this in a minute, but you'll *really* do yourself a favour if you read the manual. It doesn't have to be in-depth, just download the PDF skim every page. That'll be enough to give you an idea what's answered and where it's answered.

It's really very well done, especially considering how much most people dislike spending time on documentation.

Be aware that the jpeg viewer doesn't do free scaling -- you'll get up to the original size of the image (i.e. 1x) and downwards only multiplies (i.e. 1/2, 1/4, etc.)

<~~ so newb I've been reading and searching for the entire day and cannot find anything besides this on how to simply put music onto my toshiba gigabeat >_<

I am currently doing the Media Player 10 copy music and paste on pc to get rid of the .sat thing, but will I have to do that to music everytime I want to put new music on?

All you people seem really smart so I believe it's safe to assume none of you would want to go through that everytime you want to add a song.

Also, I have a lot of songs that have the itunes devil seed that doesn't let you play it on other devices, how do I get those to play?

Thanks so much in advance, I'm sorry if there is a place to get this information, I promise I spent a lot of time trying to look before posting.. =(

Once all your .sat files are converted then you have them on your gigabeat and they're there for keeps.

So when you want to add a new song, be it from a ripped CD, or some online store - just drag the new file from your PC to your gigabeat.

What's tricky about that ?

Assuming said songs purchased from an online store are not DRM crippled.
Rockbox does not, and never will play DRM content.

I'm a bit (a lot) confused about the .sat thing  >_<

I used the gigaroom (which is way too slow and crashes a lot) .
Windows Media 10 is much better but I couldn't put in music that was in my itunes library.  I never loaded anything from itunes.. can I do that now?

Why can I just drag music into the player hard drive now? (goto my music and just drag to the player?)

But why couldn't I just do that before instead of copy/pasting onto the pc and back on again?

So now I should be able to just drag music files, itunes seeded or not?

Thanks again!  You guys are a real help!  I'm sorry if these are just the dumbest questions.

You can... when you use Rockbox as your firmware.

If you already have a local copy of all you music - you can just delete the .sat files.  Rockbox will never read the .sat files, and has no use for them.

I'm not sure how iTunes and the Gigabeat relate, I must be missing something.
Yes, though, (I think I'm answering your question) Rockbox can browse your files wherever you drag them onto your player.

If you bought DRMed music from the iTunes Store then those tracks will not play through Rockbox.  You'll be able to transfer them to the player, but they won't play.

Tracks ripped using iTunes should play fine.

on ripping, for the noobs --

the moral of the story here may be (in part) to not use proprietary rippers or formats (itunes, toshiba whatever, etc).  use something standalone, such as EAC (exactaudiocopy.de) and encode into a free format (i swear up and down about Ogg-Vorbis, but MP3 would probably be sufficient too).  That way your music will be free forever and portable to whatever platform you want to play them on (especially DAPs with Rockbox).

On synching -- I'm really really REALLY in favor of actual file manipulation being done by the user, instead of the software.  i.e. keep your full CDs each in their own folder, and put the files manually onto your player wherever you feel like.  Personally i use a root/Music/Artist/Album/Song naming scheme, meaning that in the "root" directory of the player there's then a folder called "music" (to avoid ALL confusion with any other folders on the player already), then each artist has its own folder, then each album has its own folder therein.  It beats the crap out of having to use some proprietary software to perform mystery voodoo "synching" rituals on your player where you'll never *really* know where the actual files are kept.
