MicroSD cards on Sansa e250 -- part of root directory?
« on: August 28, 2007, 07:27:45 PM »
I've bought a Sansa e250 off of eBay, and while I wait for it to arrive, am wondering about how a microSD card will show up in the file tree.

Does it show up as a subdirectory of the root directory?

Thanks.

Yes.

I have just fitted my e280 with a 4 gig microSD (sdhc) and it shows up in the File tree & I can play music from it just fine.

Would it be possible to have as an option to list all the music files/folders in the same list so as the player works with the SD card seamlessly, so you don't have to navigate between the SD card & your music folder to see all your music?

I am already most grateful that Rockbox supports sdhc when the original firmware doesn't, & this would just be a step closer to perfection  ;)

The database doesn't distinguish between the two data volumes it finds the files and puts them all into one big list. To get it working nicely you just need well tagged files and enable the database...

Use the Database.

Does the entire 4gb show up, or only the first 2.
I didn't think the sansa e200 series supported sdhc cards (unless the rockbox
gurus hacked this!)

The Sansa firmware doesn't support SDHC.  Rockbox does.

SDHC cards use a different addressing. They either work (if SDHC is supported) or don't work, but you won't see just a part of the card.

I hope to eventually add an 8gb sdhc card to my E280.

Will the database rebuild itself each time the unit is switched on, or is there a menu (user invoked) option to rebuild the database?

Using the standard firmware it takes an age to rebuild the database after I make any changes. I don't fancy this taking twice as long each time I turn it on!

The first place to learn anything about Rockbox is the manual. As per the guidelines you should read it, it'll answer this question. ;)

I read the database section of the manual.

SDHC cards, and the way they integrate with the fixed memory are not mentioned as far as I can see.

But the fact that manual and automatic updating functions are covered... You asked if an option to rebuild the database existed, something that is covered.

OK, I'll refine the question.

Using the standard firmware, I am led to believe that the database is rebuilt each time the unit is powered up if an sd card is detected in the expansion slot.

Does this behaviour occur with the Rockbox firmware using sdhc cards, or does the unit just behave as though it actually has more internal memory (16mb for example).

Rockbox only rebuilds the database if you have auto-update enabled or if you choose to manually update it. As the manual says. If inserting a card changed the behaviour, the manual would say this.
