Rockbox on iPod now on Cnet video
« on: August 28, 2007, 12:21:07 PM »
Apparently as posted there yesterday, a nice Cnet video on the use and installation of Rockbox on iPod, "Free your iPod."

I can't view this at work, but I most certainly will when I get out later.

Not too bad!  I'm not generally a fan of installation videos, but I do like the fact that he directs viewers to the manual at least four times.

He did get the instructions for getting back in Apple OS wrong though - he rebooted from within Rockbox instead of shutting it down first. Not bad though :)

Yep, I was surprised at the continual (and emphatic) reference to reading the manual.  I guess the reviewer has been to the site and been asked to read the *%$** manual.

Well, it's the fine manual, isn't it? ;)

Fantastic!

Oops!, he forgot to say the fact that one of the main reasons of Rockbox is to read directly the files in the hard disk "as are", with no itunes messing.

He said that indirectly with this "now you can just drag 'n' drop your music files".

He does, but using itunes -as far as I know- you also just drag and drop the files (onto itunes),

It can sound "the same" for some people.

The impression I got from the video was, You now can unlock your player and not be tied to what a manufacturer (e.g. Apple) says; I think Apple and other users will get that message loud and clear ...

What I found so nice was, the video shows how easy the Rockboxing process is, which may help to quell users "fears."

One of the big messages that we need to send, however, is that Rockbox is NOT a "skin", nor is it illegal. Some guy sitting next to me on the subway yesterday saw me using my iPod, and he thought that I skinned the Apple firmware. I told him no, this is all new software, and showed him the Rockbox credits screen. I told him that this is a free software project for many DAPs, and then he tells me something that nearly made me freak out:

"Oh, so it's one of those illegal hacker things, isn't it? Well sorry, but I don't want to go to jail for using this."

I can't believe just how IGNORANT some people can seriously be! I've gotten a lot of people into Rockbox for their own DAPs, and some guy thinks I'm part of some illegal "1337 h4x0rz" operation.

But I think this video should answer a lot of questions about Rockbox, and Free Software and hackers in general.

I tried. Oh, how I so tried. He was your typical Micro$oft drooling drone. :( Wouldn't listen to a word I said.

I guess there's just no pleasing some people in this world. If they wish to remain ignorant, then I can't help them.
