Odd MP3 playback glitches on Nano

Hi all,

Having a very strange problem on a 1st gen nano i just bought.

1. I put Apple's firmware on with 1 album all is fine.
2. I put the latest rockbox build with 1 album and all is fine.
3. I reconnect and put more files on and
- USB connection is very slow now
- same files which played back earlier ok now have artifacts on playback as if they're streaming.

Any thoughts what could cause this?
