Hidden Files no longer hidden?! And other problems....
« on: August 26, 2007, 06:59:20 AM »
I've loved RockBox after I began using it on my 3G Apple iPod about 2 weeks ago.  However, it seems to be a little temperamental for me... last week I left the house with my iPod to go on a 4 hour train journey, only to find when I got on the train that RockBox would see all my files and load them but not play them, but rather would crash when it got to the 'now playing' screen.  I tried a load of different files, and tried disabling things like ReplayGain in case it was that, but no cigar.  It was a LOOONG and quiet trip for me!

Anywho, a quick re-install when I got home fixed the problem, but afaik I didn't do anything to RockBox prior to it breaking, which is why I'm a little worried that it kinda weirded out on me on its own.

Now, I'm having a similarly 'i didn't do anything!' problem.  When I select 'Files' from the menu and go to browse my music, instead of just the usual music folders and the iPod's 'Notes' and 'Contacts' folders, I now also have a bunch of weirdly named folders and files which either were not there or were hidden before.  Files like '._.Trashes', '.DS_Score' and folders like '.Spotlight-V100' and 'iPod_Control' have suddenly appeared.  I'm obviously worried that this has happened without me knowing what I've done to make it happen, and that I might embark on another long journey only to find that RockBox has borked again...

Anyone have any ideas as to anything I might have done to make these two weird things happen?  Or is RockBox just that buggy?

And what did you do before you did nothing? ;)

Those are files created by MacOS. I assume you simply changed the "Show filetypes" option by accident. You might also try to chkdsk / fsck your Ipod, perhaps this is related to filesystem errors.

No its not. At least not for me (and as far as I noticed quite some users).

I DID change the show filetypes option!  And not even by accident! Hahah, thanks for pointing out my dumbness.  No longer will I accuse RB of being buggy, I promise! :D

Still doesn't explain the first and far weirder problem though, although that was probably something I did too!  Any other RB users ever have it crash when trying to play any file?

If that happens again, try following the reset sequence.  On later model iPods, you reset by pressing and holding Menu + Select simultaneously.  I'm not sure if it is the same on the 3G.

Menu and Play/Pause is the combination for the 3G iPods.

yeah that's what I press to get it into disk mode to actually access RockBox, I think the menu and select is actually right for the soft reset, but not sure if that would even fix the problem?  Ah well, better just hope it doesn't happen again! :)

I am not aware of MENU and SELECT being a specific 3G combination.  MENU and PLAY/PAUSE is reset; << and >> are disc mode.

Hmm, well on mine, << + >> does nothing and Menu + Play/Pause is disc mode... Are you sure you're thinking of the correct model?  Mine's the 3G, it's greyscale, has no clickwheel and 4 buttons across the top of the wheel?  Maybe I've got the wrong model!

Maybe Apple changed it with recent firmware versions?

And http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 seems to confirm that disk mode is the << and >> buttons.  They will only put the device into disk mode after a restart, as with all iPods.

Ah, see, I thought what I was doing was putting it into disk mode so that it could access RockBox... so how come I'm resetting it to access RB?

You need to reset it to get the iPod to run the bootloader and load Rockbox. Otherwise it'll remain in the Apple OS forever.

AAh, so I was doing the right thing, it's just not 'disk mode' :)

Cheers! :D
