Nano: bat discharges while off
« on: August 22, 2007, 09:24:16 PM »
Hi guys,
(I tried looking this issue up, but got bored after 5 irrelevant search results pages)

I was recently able to successfully reinstall rockbox to my ipod nano, (accidentally updated the firmware, which screwed the bootloader. Finally bothered to roll it back ::)) and have noticed that the battery is rapidly discharging while the player is off. I'm pretty sure this is the case, because it has happened at least 2 times. I first noticed it after letting it charge completely, then unplugged it and left it off for about two days.  Next time I went to use it, I got the apple firmware low-bat image.  So I plugged it in for ~5 minutes,  then checked RB's reading of the battery, which it correctly found to be empty.  So I charged it fully again, and left if off for a few days again. But today when I went to use it, it was again completely empty.
The silly thing has sat undisturbed on my desk, and I know no-one else was using it.

I did see a couple of related posts, but they were from 2006, and didn't see any solutions.

Anyway, tech data: 2GB iPod Nano, First Gen
Using Apple Firmware 1.1.1 (Loader2copatible)
Using the RB daily build from August 11, 2007.  (Sorry it's old; I'll update in the morning)
Loader2 is the bootloader.

I'm sure this issue could be circumvented by loading Apple when I intend to leave the player off for a few days, but this seems inconvenient (but, if it's the only thing that works, then it beats the devil out of charging until the moment i need the player  ;)) I don't recall having this problem in December, so perhaps it is only a build issue?

So yah, any thoughts?

We do not support Loader2 in these forums.  Please try with the official bootloader to see if you can replicate the problem.  Otherwise, post in the Loader2 thread in the unofficial builds forum.

Thanks. I didn't realize
Alright, switched to the official bootloader. I'll see if the issue persists.

Ok; charged it this morning (not fully, but just above 83%).  I then used it during my 35 minute commute, and turned it off when I was done; the battery read 80%. Tried to turn it on during lunch (roughly 4 hours later) and it wouldn't come on. It gave me the apple "low battery" image again, and turned off.

Additionally, I just plugged it in, and when it briefly displayed the RB main interface before switching to being plugged in, the battery meter read 86.

Could it not be shutting off completely/properly? Does this seem like a hardware problem, or something that could be fixed through code?
Thanks for any responses; I'm just curious.

Guys i'm having this problem too and often!
But i'm using my iPod only about 6 months since I earn it. I do believe that I messed up my batt pluggin my iPod on a very old pc, but I'm not shure about that.

Don't like to be pedantic here, but you are shutting it down correctly? (very long press of PLAY...)

It may also be worth doing an OF firmware upgrade. I had a similar problem with a nano I got on ebay that would not switch off (in the OF). I did a firmware upgrade and then installed Rockbox and it's been good as gold since.

OF firmware; Sorry I'm not sure what you mean bascule. do you mean the Apple firmware?
Yes, I was shutting down using  the long press of Play. (unfortunately, and embarassingly [yet undoubtedly conveniently] I've not had this issue since my last post.)

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on it and post more data when I have them.  Where should I put further information about this issue? continue to add to this thread in Hardware, or is there a board more attuned to this issue?

There have also been a number of reports of this behavior on Apple's forums.

I've just noticed mine has done this too. I can't recharge either because it connects to the computer without a USB connection then restarts itself connected by USB then shuts down and does the whole thing again.

Basically I'm not sure how I can charge my nano now as it won't stay connected in order to charge?

This means I can't reflash the firmware, find any details about it or even put the apple firmware on it because it will not stay connected and charge :(

Try turning the "Hold" switch on so that it boots into the Apple firmware instead of loading Rockbox.

Ended up leaving it connected and after a fair few reconnect/disconnect it's charging, going to have to put the Apple firmware back now as rockbox is now unusable on my nano :( Discharges the battery even when switched off and plays vids and MP3s with glitches all over the place now....I guess someone broke it somewhere.....pity as I love it to death!

I think this problem may actually have to do with the Apple firmware/bootloader code, as it's something that folks have complained about on Apple's forums.  I had it happen, but an update of the Apple firmware seems to have fixed it.  Does your player also do this from the Apple firmware?  It did on my player.
