Database creating taking ages, how to avoid?

Hi all :)

I'm using my iAudio X5V to store my photo collection, since all my Ogg Vorbis encoded music takes less than 16GB. I think this is a common situation, using the DAP as external storage.

Well, I have about 3000 songs, and that's very fast to index and put in the database, but the 6000 photographs are not so rapidly indexed...  The problem is that, from time to time, I change some metadata in the songs I already have and a simple "Update now" doesn't work, I have to rebuild the database, and it takes a lot.

I already know that you cannot tell the database not to scan some directories, so I'm wondering if there is a way to tell the database not to scan some suffixes (e.g. "jpg") so the photographs are not indexed.

Moreover: will the photographs take up space in the database (for example, by their filenames being listed as "do not scan in the next run"). If having 6k photographs will make my database long enough to fill almost all RAM (I have it in RAM), I'll happily remove the photographs...

Last but not least: is having a second partition a good idea to store the data I don't want the DAP to see? Will rockbox fw ignore the second partition? Will I damage my X5V (as in the bootloader not being able to boot rockbox anymore) if I partition the disk?

No, it doesn't, but travels the files anyway, taking a lot of time doing so. Sorry, I think I didn't explain the issue correctly  ::)

By now, I've removed the images from the DAP so the database creation and updated is fast. I probably will repartition the disk or store the images in a tarball. I don't want to be able to see them in the DAP, I just want to carry them.

Repartitioning the drive should help as rockbox will not see the second partition as long as you use an official build. Make sure the first one is a primary partition though as otherwise rockbox wont see it...
