dead(white screen )X5
« on: August 21, 2007, 09:45:43 AM »
I had some trouble updating my X5, an eager friend helped me sort out the problem. Unfortuneately he deleted all the files on it !!, including the hidden (?) ones. I have tried to re install but all i get is a white screen and nothing else. Apart from killing the friend what else can I do?

You can always put a fresh image in the system folder, insert the power cable and start it and it'll upgrade automatically.

The upgrade mechanism in an X5 is impossible to remove or kill, it is handled by a prebootloader.

So please, read my mail again.

The only files on the X5 are as follows
x5.fw
and in the rockbox folder

rockjbox.iaudio
rockbox.inf
tagnavi.config
viewers.config

and the following folders
backdrops
codecs
codepages
docs
eqs
icons
langs
recpresets
rocks
themes
wps

and thats it!!
maybe  he has achieved the impossible ?!

It's in flash. It's not on the disk. What *exactly* have you done while trying to recover it, step by step?

x5.fw
The installation (or upgrade) instructions of the rockbox manual as well as the official cowon ones only mention an x5_fw.bin that has to be placed in a FIRMWARE directory (which you should be able to create if it doesn't exist at the moment). This is what I read in the 2.2.4 Rockbox Manual - Installing the boot loader and on www.cowonglobal.com - support, firmware upgrade.

Note: This is just what I noticed when reading the post, I'm not a 100% sure because I haven't done this myself. Though I think after reading the links thoroughly you might be able to decide...

I hadnt used the x5 for a while.I started it up, but all I got was the white screen, nothing else no response .
I checked through windows explorer and evrything seemed (to my inexpert eyes) to be there all the folders etc.
I tried to rectify this situation by updating with the latest release.
No luck.
This is when my EXPERT friend took over and deleted everything(thro explorer) saying we needed a fresh start.

he put on the latest release etc but still no go. This is where I am now, with the folders and files as explained earlier.
Thanks for the input by the way...

Instead of just repeating yourself, can't you just please try the upgrade procedure as described in the rockbox manual and on the cowon site?

I have tried the firmware fix as per cowon site followed the instructions to the letter. nothing. When I check via explorer the X5_fw  file has vanished.  I have tried this six times and each time nothing and the x5 file just vanishes..

Due to the lack of precise details before in this thread, can you please state exactly and step by step what you did? What file names, directories, actions, buttons, cables plugged in, cables ripped out were used etc.

For example, the correct and full file name is not X5_fw, it is x5_fw.bin. A very important difference too.

Curse windows explorer and it's default "hide extensions of known files types" behaviour!
