video not working

i tried to format a video to the correct format for my ipod video and all that came out was a black screen with only sound. it wouldnt even play at all in vlc . am i doing something wrong. maybe the video converter i used is doing it wrong? all i do is drag and drop the video on top of this  vlc file and wait a few moments. what should i try to fix this problem?

This usually means the frame rate of your video isn't *exactly* one of the right ones for MPEG-2, and VLC isn't converting the video stream. Try manually setting a frame rate.
