Ensure that you have the correct Hex (firmware) file for your model player.
Is Rockbox already installed on your player ?.

1). Do a "Diskscan" of your players Hard Disk.
if you still cant read your files, then
2). I would suggest you format the players Hard Drive using either irivers "format" option in their menu or format via a P.C, IF you format with a P.C. then you must format as FAT32, NOT NTFS.
Note: backup all music before formatting.
Fix the File reading issue first before you do anything else.

I am guessing you are trying to go straight from 1.19 to 1.66, I wonder (just a thought) if trying an intermediate firmware might help?
About the disk not showing any files in the iriver firmware, I suggest as Dunno says to try first running chkdsk, then formatting. If the screen is working as you say and you can get to the iriver firmware, first try formatting from there. If you have 37 Gb free I'm guessing the player came empty, but a chkdsk might well help.
Mikerman:
As far as I am aware, intermediate firmware is not necessary to upgrade--the firmware is fully contained.

I know, but if it nothing else works it is worth a go.
