a lot of the type of people who are minded to write replacement firmwares want more hardware than the iPod delivers.

What kinds of hardware? Give some examples? Just curious :P

When I brought my ipod, it was the only thing I know of that has a large enough harddrive and the combo of a large enough screen and good enough navigation setup so that I don't need to press infinite # of ups/downs to find what I'm looking for. Since then I'm just too poor to replace it :) Just wonder if there is incentive enough for me to look for an alternative.

For me:

Lack of radio, lack of (easy) recording, lack of optical input/output

Other considerations - without rockbox being forced into using itunes and being unable to copy songs on and off easily....

The list goes on.

I stress again - there is nothing wrong with the iPod, it is just what you want from it.

Yeah, although I agree, I do miss being able to record in hi fi and easily, like I can with my blessed MiniDisc units :-*, the pros of iPod for me still seem to outweigh the cons.

I can't STAND iTunes, and the way it always seems to want to reorganise my perfectly placed music collection, which is why I love RockBox, and being able to transfer my albums with their lovely directory structure intact :)

But the pros, the intuitive controls, the wheel navigation, the large screen, the no-nonsense menus - it just all fits together for me.  Which leads me to ask....is there any 'theme' for RB which is quite similar to the regular iPod theme?  I mean, not to be heretical or anything, but if Apple updated the iPod firmware to allow it to just play my files from its hard drive without all this iTunes/ID3 Tagged order nonsense, I'd probably ditch RockBox! :D Although i WOULD miss the in-depth audio options...and the portable Doom.....

I almost never listen to the radio as long as I have other things to listen to, and I have my beloved Edirol R09 for recording, which is far, far, far, far,... far superior to any DAP's recording (without external amps, of course). So I guess I'll wait and keep my eyes on rockboxable DAPs with 160GB or 250GB harddrive :D

There are, but probably not on rockbox.org since there are all those nasty copyright issues. You can probably make yourself one.

As a note [IANALawyer (but have talked to them) and Rockbox's position on this issue has changed a few times], the theme would be fine as long as it didn't use the exact same images that the OF uses.  Interface copyright is not recognized in Sweden.  That said, don't upload one to the wiki...wait for something else to come around...

As well, this thread is getting quite offtopic.

Well, honestly, it isn't up to you, as it is in the guidelines.  ;)

If anyone wishes to continue this topic in another thread, feel free to start another.
