APE Playback on iPod Video 80gb
« on: August 18, 2007, 02:15:59 AM »
Hi everybody!
Just bought iPod Video 80Gb and installed rockbox firmware r14374-070817.
The main idea to buy iPod was to play APE & FLAC on it (i've got a great collection of ape & flac). I was disappointed when experienced problems with ape playback. It doesn't play it like it should. The sound is constantly skipping and i feel how the HD begins to spin. Reading user post I found no such problem and everyone is quite happy. Where did i go wrong?

APE is far, far too slow on iPod to be able to run without skips. Where did you see that it was running full speed on the iPod?

Well,
A) Why didn't you mention that before, and
B) Are you using a theme that doesn't have peakmeters on it?

I was trying different themes. Now I've got an error "divide by zero at 0003BE74" and can't reboot my iPod. Maybe there are basic rules how to play this or that file?

Then turn hold On, then Off, and try again. Hold it for at least 30 seconds. Repeat the whole procedure as necessary. We can't prevent that from working.

Thanks god! Rebooted! I was trying to load original firmware (unsuccessfully)

What about playback?

UPD
FLAC is playing ok, tested another file. Maybe someone can advice a program to convert from APE to FLAC (directly, without decompressing to wav)? As far as I understood, APE will never play without skipping?

APE is too CPU intensive for the iPod.  It plays nicely on the gigabeat which has a much more powerful CPU.

Try Foobar on windows or under wine for the conversion.

In your previous post you asked for programs to convert APE to FLAC.  I suggested Foobar.

Not likely.  APE is really, really slow to decode.  It takes a lot of time on GHz desktop CPUs, so doing it on an Ipod is probably never going to work well.

Strange things happening. Some ape's are playing, others are skipping? maybe it  all depends ion version of codec? I've got Alan Parson's Project - Ammonia Avenue (converted in APE) and it's playing just well, and other ape's are skipping. Increasing hdd antiskip (or smth like that) leads to less skips, but they still occur
