Recorder V2 charging screen lockups
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:40:17 PM »
My V2 recorder quickly locks up when in the charging screen (which shows a battery with an animated sine wave of dots inside and battery voltage at the bottom).  The battery voltage can be 0.0something V which is clearly wrong and impossible.

I'm using firmware_v2.bin and rockbox-20070815 built as RomBox without TagCache.  I had this problem with an earlier version as well (probably around 2.5).  Charging works fine Rockbox is running normally.   With the old version after reconnecting the battery I was also able to get a different charging screen without the voltage measurement which doesn't lock up.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I'm also wondering how USB charging (not in disk mode) compares to charging with a charger in terms of speed.

You should probably add this as a buf in the tracker with as much detail as possible, and after trying with an official build.

What's an official build?  Would the latest build from http://www.rockbox.org/daily.shtml be okay?

yes, a daily or current build is fine, since you built without tagcache support your build is technically modified and we only want bugreports for unmodified builds, I do however have strong doubts that it will affect anything, also it's good to test with a regular build that is not rombox or flashed

I've used the latest daily build (r14396), flashing rockbox.ucl, and the problems still occurred.  I've posted it to Flyspray: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/7631

I have had this problem with a jukebox FM recorder in the past and now with a v2 recorder.  I am wondering if it has something to do with applying too much voltage to the box and damaging something in the charging circuit.  I plugged mine into a charger for about 5 mins and found out later that it was putting out 9 Volts instead of the rated 6 (it was a supplied archos charger but I picked up the recorder of ebay so it was used- I believe the archos charger is a regulated power supply so it should read 6V open).  Im not sure if this has anything to do with it but I figured I would add it to the discussion.
This problem is a real pain when your battery is low because you have to wait until the charge is high enough to start by itself in order to play music while it is charging.

I cannot be certain that the V2 Recorder I have is okay hardware-wise.  I certainly didn't apply a high voltage, and the previous user charged it via USB, but he got it off eBay without a charger and who knows what the device experienced before then.  That's the main reason why I originally posted here instead of making a bug report in Flyspray.

I nevertheless suspect this is a Rockbox issue based on my detailed overall observations.  I find it hard to imagine a hardware failure which would cause the behaviours I observed.

I don't know if this thread should be locked because it may be inconvenient to have information in two places (here and in Flyspray).

I did some more investigation and found that the lockup or power-off is caused by Rockbox detecting a low battery voltage because IDE power is needed to measure battery voltage and that is off while charging.  This means it's definitely a bug and not a hardware problem.  For more information see http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/7631 .  I am locking this thread so the discussion isn't in two places.  If you object to the lock, send me a private message.
