There a couple ways to approach this:

You could look at the iPod accessory commit and try enabling the RS232 driver for the Sansa and see if you can get any signals out of it with an accessory connected.

You could reverse engineer the OF to see how it talks to the accessories.

You could tap into the dock connector on a working Sansa to monitor its communications and see if you can understand the protocol.

In fact some combination of all 3 may work best.
