Freezing screen on ipod 80 gb.
« on: August 17, 2007, 06:19:57 AM »
Hi. I'm rockbox user since it was released for ipod 80 gb. Everything was fine until about a month ago it started to freezing the screen while playing music. I have latest daily build and my files are regular mp3s (about 5 min. length, 128-320 kbps). It's really irritating to reboot my ipod after couple of minutes of listening. I really enjoy my rockbox and don't wanna get back to the original os so please help. Lot of respect for the crew and thank you :)

Latest daily build doesn't mean much.  Please update to the latest current build and tell us the build number.

Sorry, I forgot.  What bootloader version?  I think for iPod you can tell by pressing right when it is booting (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Hmmm, odd - some whilst you are on the WPS, the screen + controls are frozen, but music still plays?

How long have you left it?  Does it become responsive again?  Do you use database or filetree?  If you use database, do you have it set to auto update?  If so, I wonder if it is updating in the background.

I think we need someone with an iPod here - I only have a H140 and a gigabeat.

BigBambi: YOU RANG, MR. ADDAMS?

all999: I've got a 30GB iPod video, but I used to get the same symptoms as you. I solved the issue by turning the Idle Poweroff feature in the Settings Menu (Settings > General Settings > System) completely off. I theorize that the Idle Poweroff function was causing the lockups, but I'd also like to know if any other iPod users have this problem as well before I prove my theory.

So give it a shot and see what happens.

i've been posting a lot about this issue in other sections of the forum... but here is my theory and workaround:

my ipod (80gb) used to freeze all the time.  i'm talking, almost every time i went to use it, i would have to hard reset. eventually i noticed that this occured after either shutting down (or auto shutting down) or after pausing (random amount of time before freeze).

i took a guess, and coded up a patch to disable pausing (it calls the stop playback code, instead of pause), and it has solved all my problems.  i haven't had a freeze since installing the patch.

Yes, and "Pausing" has nothing to do with "Shutting Down" other than being actions triggered by the same button.

Please, don't spam your theory all over our forums, as I've already stated rather clearly that your theory isn't based on much but an assumption you've made, and a rather sketchy one at that. Playback is not paused while shutting down, so why don't you offer some proof that the pause code had *anything* to do with your freezes while shutting down, rather than saying "They aren't happening right now so it must've been true." I'm not getting any freezes at all: Does that mean that since they're not happening right now, the proper fix is "Don't be yegods"? Please, do some actual investigation deeper in, or at the very least document things clearly (I don't see any previous mention of varying time periods after pausing, only that it froze when you paused which sounds like immediately) so that people can investigate properly. But stop trying to claim that every freezing problem you come across is the exact same one as yours.

absolutely false.

the first thing that is done in the wps code when a SYS_POWEROFF event is received is to call bookmark_autobookmark... and the second thing that function does is to call audio_pause.  i rest my circumstantial-but-now-with-more-credo case.  please stop assuming i'm wrong, and just get someone who knows this code really well to take a look at it...  it can't take that must time, and it would seemingly solve a lot of problems.

Firstly, don't say "just get someone who knows this code really well to take a look at it." If you want it done now, look at it. You have no right, NONE AT ALL, to give orders.

Secondly, you've given evidence that yours has something to do with the pause function. Fine. I missed something when checking it myself, and I'll admit that.

I never said you were wrong. I said you need to investigate more, and provide evidence. Repeatedly.

that wasn't an order.  that fact that you would take it as an order, shows that you are coming at my request from the wrong direction.  you're assuming an antagonistic attitude, and you are really demotivating me from looking at the problem at all.  i've worked around it to my satisfaction, and i have absolutely no obligation to do anything else.

If you say "just get someone who knows this code really well to look at it", what is is supposed to be interpreted as. There is no indication that you're asking, as there's no "please" or "would you." Honestly, a statement of that sort can't easily be interpreted as a request, since you told whoever was reading to do something it can only really be interpreted as an order or at least instruction.

Perhaps you should think a little more carefully as to your word choice if you'd like to avoid misunderstandings in the future, but I understand now.

i haven't been following these forums very long.  maybe you're used to a bunch of 14 yr old pricks coming on and pushing you around.  i don't know.  but it does seems to me that you're a little short on the fuse with a new comer.

sorry if i came off as demanding.
