how to apply an patch

i'm a newbie in this forum and i would like to apply an patch.
in the wiki is an article about the installing an patch but i don't understand it really good. so my question is: need i the source code and Compiling The Source Code?

Or can i apply the patch without the things??
is there any other, maybe easy manuel for this action??

Yes, you need the source and yes you need to first be able to build Rockbox completely so you need the development environment setup as well.

I would recommend going the VMware route, but make sure you have the latest VMWare player downloaded from their web site, plus v4 of the Rockbox Debian machine, otherwise you will have problems compiling for ARM based targets like iPods.
