How To Choose the Correct Installation Files

(1/1)

Iggy64:
Yes, I really have tried to find the answer in these forums and on the Rockbox website.  Perhaps I am just too darn tired, or I give up easier than I used to - - and I apologize if I have simply overlooked the answer.

I have an 80GB iPod Video which I am ready to Rockbox, or else I might kill myself from trying to work with the clunky iTunes firmware.  I have read the truly excellent Rockbox manual, and it appears that I need to download three files from Rockbox: the firmware, the bootloader, and the fonts package.

I have downloaded file ipodpatcher.exe, the bootloader.

I have downloaded file rockbox-fonts.zip, the fonts package.

But I'm not sure which firmware file I should use.

I have downloaded rockbox-ipodvideo.zip.  Then I found rockbox.zip, which was listed under iPod Video.  Now I see that there is also an "iPod Video 64MB. " But its download has the same filename as that for iPod Video.  Is it, in fact, the same file?  Which one of these three files should I use for an 80GB iPod?  How can I recognize the correct file?

Yes, I am an iPod rookie, and a complete Rockbox dufus.  But I am enthusiastic about trying Rockbox and getting around this inbred iTunes firmware.  I hate to get too far with this, though, and find out I downloaded the wrong files to begin with.

Many thanks for your patience and your help.

Febs:
You should use a build from the "Current Build" page:

http://build.rockbox.org/

The "64MB" iPod Video build is for the 60 GB and 80 GB models.  The "32MB" build is for the 30 GB models, which have 32 MB of RAM.

Iggy64:
Thank you very much.

By the way, did I download the correct bootloader and fonts files?

I really appreciate your help.  Nothing worse than getting all muddled up in a project and finding out you started with the wrong ingredients.

Ipodpatcher contains all bootloaders and uses the correct one automatically. The fonts are not device specific, so there is only one single package.

Iggy64:
Thanks, again, to Febs and bluebrother for getting me off to the right start.

I'm continuing to study the manual and browse the forums to learn as much as I can about how Rockbox runs on the 80 GB iPod.  I hope I can be as successful as some people report.  It will be great to simply move my music onto the iPod's hard disc, instead of having to strain it through iTunes' arcane file setup.  I could never keep track of my music using Apple's strange system.
