inconsistent booting to ROCKbox
(1/1)
majik:
I am using ROCKbox on my 20G 4th Gen BW IPod. I've been using it for about two months now, updating to the "current build" every now and then.
Ever since I started using it, the iPod has not been consistent in booting to the ROCKbox firmware. I sometimes have to keep trying for about 5-10 min using various combinations even though this page of the manual says Remove your player from the computer’s USB port.Rebooting the Ipod by holding Menu+Select for a couple of seconds until the player reboots. Now Rockbox should load. When you see the Rockbox splash screen, Rockbox is loaded and ready for use. I do make sure to shut down the iPod as specified in this page by pressing and holding the Play button. It's frustrating when I grab the iPod to listen to while I drive only to have it not boot to ROCKbox. I can't even mess with it b/c now that I'm driving. When I turn it on, i get the apple logo then the exclamation-in-a-triangle and folder error (see example here). It then reboots again to the apple logo and back to the error, etc.
It is also inconsistent when plugging it to the PC, it is not recognized as an iPod. Instead it is recognized as "Removable Disk" and no files/folders are viewable. When it it is recognized as an iPod, I can browse the files/folders. I try entering disk mode manually as described here (under usb connection) but it doesn't always work.
I tried to get the release/version info but could not get the iPod to load to ROCKbox after about 10 min or so of trying, but I did update it sometime early last week. I was also trying to update it just before starting this post, but couldn't get the PC to recognize the iPod.
Is it just me?? What am I doing wrong? Why is it such a hassle for me?
GodEater:
The Apple warning triangle you're getting isn't generally something which is displayed unless there's something physically wrong with the hard drive in your iPod. Have you dropped it at all?

It's been roughed up a bit over the years....so you think it's the iPod itself?
