Why does it lost its hour?
« on: August 12, 2007, 12:51:54 AM »
Sometimes when I power on my gigabeat, all is fine, but not the hour setting. It says --:-- at the place of the hour. I have to set it another time. And I use my gigabeat as a watch, and it happens when there is no watch near... So why?

Thanks

Usually this means you've flipped the battery switch.

There is a known problem with Gigabeat clocks becoming 'unset'. I have no idea whether anyone is working on it, and there does not even appear to be a bug report filed.

It happens on mine, too, but I have never been able to determine any repeatable circumstances that cause it to fail.

@ Llorean: the battery switch (obviously) definitely causes it, but it does happen other times that are not nearly so obvious.

I guess it's when you power off, sometimes there's an error and the RTC shuts down too. I'm not sure, you know, I'm an "expert" :P

No Llorean, I'm not dumb at this point, lol

Well, provide information on how to to reproduce it, if you're an "expert."

I've got two Gigabeats, and it doesn't happen on either. I won't say it doesn't happen, but I do have to ask the obvious questions because you didn't answer them in advance by providing information on how to reproduce it.

This occasionally happens on my gigabeat too.  I definitely haven't switched the battery switch, and can find no pattern to it.  If I do, I will consort with flyspray.

There was a flyspray entry for similar problem on some H320 players:
http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/7337

But it was deemed a hardware issue and closed.  On the H320s the unsetting of the RTC appeared to be correlated with recharging.

Yeah, that was my Flyspray entry!

I opened that on behalf of my girlfriend and another friend of mine, both iriver H320 users and Rockboxers. They were having that issue from time to time, and all three of us thought it may have been a bug with Rockbox.

It turned out to be the iriver hardware itself, so case closed.

It seemed like the clincher for that case was the re-setting problem occurring both in Rockbox and in the OF.  I suppose we could test whether or not this happens in the OF, but this would require booting into OF for a considerable period of time.  *shudders*

You're right. Like in Monopoly, my Gigabeat went straight to Rockbox, did not pass Go, did not collect £200.

I don't relish the prospect of having to fire it up into the GigaRoom or whatever it was called...

Who would? The Gigabeat OF has got to be one of the most baroque pieces of crap I have ever seen! And I thought the Archos devices had bad OFs...

I've never even booted the OF, and have never installed any software* on my PC.  I'd prefer not to now!

*gigabeat software.  I clearly have other software!
