If I'm not misstaken, they're needed as antenna (aerial?)

I did have the headphones plugged in. :)

But it sounds to me like you may have accidentally changed from "preset" mode to "scan" mode - check the button table in the FM radio chapter of the manual to see how to switch between them.
If that's not the case, you could also check the .fmr file in the .rockbox/fmpresets folder that should have been created by running the "auto scan". The FmPresets wiki page is the best source of information about them at the moment as the manual is a bit coarse in that area.

Ugh. I got this MP3 player from my son several months ago. I carry the instructions around with me, but I am still having a lot of trouble getting used to it. I probably would have done better with the original hardware. This is so...complicated, for a person with minimal computer skills.
1. The FM radio chapter of the instructions I printed don't really tell me much. Not that I understand based on what I see on the Mp3 player when I go to "FM radio" in the menu and click on it.
2. ".fmr file in the .rockbox/fmpresets folder" Whu? Huh? ??? This is why I hate this. I have no idea what that means. I don't know how to get to the fm presets. I have been all over this thing, and I don't remember seeing that anywhere.
I will go read the fm radio part again, but it confused me because what it says I should see is not what I see. :(

Can you describe exactly what you see on the screen when you navigate to the FM Radio screen? Does it say "Scanning xx.xx MHz"? I've tried the radio on my H120 and it behaves as the manual describes.

I admit my explanation was a bit short, what I meant is:
- connect the player to your computer
- open the explorer (or whatever filebrowser there is on your computer)
- look what's inside the ".rockbox" directory.
- Is there a subdirectory called "fmpresets"?
- If this exists, is there any file with an extension of "fmr" inside (for example "presets01.fmr")?
If there is no such file or even directory then it either couldn't find any stations during the scan or they weren't saved correctly. But one step after the other, it's more important to find out whether the file or the directory exists.
P.S. By the way, at first I missed your first 2 answers because I didn't expect them to be in 3 successive posts (Sorry to be nitpicky but the forum guidelines, you agreed on, ask you to modify your post rather than double or triple post if noone answered in the meantime. Even if it will become a long post, it avoids exactly that confusion.)
