fm radio on iriver jukebox not working
« on: August 11, 2007, 02:48:07 PM »
I just tried to listen to fm radio on my jukebox, and after I clicked on "fm radio" in the menu it asked to do a scan, so I did it.  Now, when I try to navigate the stations, it just takes off and runs through all the numbers, as if there are no stations.  I live in a major metropolitan area.  We have tons of radio stations.  What is going on.

Also, pressing the buttons, with the exception of the power off button, does nothing to stop it "scanning" the stations.

I read the instructions, but they were no help with trouble shooting this.

Thanks,

Sunny

Yes, we could help better if you tell us which device you have. But it sounds to me like you may have accidentally changed from "preset" mode to "scan" mode - check the button table in the FM radio chapter of the manual to see how to switch between them.

If that's not the case, you could also check the .fmr file in the .rockbox/fmpresets folder that should have been created by running the "auto scan". The FmPresets wiki page is the best source of information about them at the moment as the manual is a bit coarse in that area.

BigBambi: Why "H1x0, H3x0, H10"? ... the H10's radio isn't supported by Rockbox yet. ;)

And I thought I was infallible!

I didn't know that - I have/have used H1x0 and H3x0, but not H10  :)

sunnyco: Did you happen to try this without any headphones attached?
If I'm not misstaken, they're needed as antenna (aerial?)

I did have the headphones plugged in.  :)

Ugh.  I got this MP3 player from my son several months ago.  I carry the instructions around with me, but I am still having a lot of trouble getting used to it.  I probably would have done better with the original hardware.  This is so...complicated, for a person with minimal computer skills.

1.  The FM radio chapter of the instructions I printed don't really tell me much.  Not that I understand based on what I see on the Mp3 player when I go to "FM radio" in the menu and click on it.

2.  ".fmr file in the .rockbox/fmpresets folder"  Whu?  Huh?   ???  This is why I hate this.  I have no idea what that means.  I don't know how to get to the fm presets.  I have been all over this thing, and I don't remember seeing that anywhere.

I will go read the fm radio part again, but it confused me because what it says I should see is not what I see.  :(

Can you describe exactly what you see on the screen when you navigate to the FM Radio screen? Does it say "Scanning xx.xx MHz"? I've tried the radio on my H120 and it behaves as the manual describes.

I admit my explanation was a bit short, what I meant is:
- connect the player to your computer
- open the explorer (or whatever filebrowser there is on your computer)
- look what's inside the ".rockbox" directory.
- Is there a subdirectory called "fmpresets"?
- If this exists, is there any file with an extension of "fmr" inside (for example "presets01.fmr")?

If there is no such file or even directory then it either couldn't find any stations during the scan or they weren't saved correctly. But one step after the other, it's more important to find out whether the file or the directory exists.

P.S. By the way, at first I missed your first 2 answers because I didn't expect them to be in 3 successive posts (Sorry to be nitpicky but the forum guidelines, you agreed on, ask you to modify your post rather than double or triple post if noone answered in the meantime. Even if it will become a long post, it avoids exactly that confusion.)

Sorry about that, and thanks for letting me know.  I am on so many forums, and I signed up for this one so long ago, it is hard to remember this kind of stuff.  It won't happen again.  :)

I will try looking on my computer later.  I have a very busy day ahead of me.

I downloaded the current build on 26th July 08 (it says it is build (it says it is r18117-080724) and installed it on my iRiver H120. My impression is that the FM radio part of this build is unusable. Do others agree with me?

When I select FM Radio in the menu it says that no settings are found, do I want to Autoscan? When I answer Yes, it does a scan, finally stopping at a frequency with no reception (white noise). The display at this point says 'Mode: Preset'. When I press the Stop button I see 'Save changes ?'. If I answer yes I see gobbledegook filling the top half of the screen. If after the scan use the context menu to 'Save Preset List' I also see gobbledegook. If, after the Autoscan, I use the Navi/left-right to explore the stations that have been found, many have no perceptible reception, some do. I haven't found a way of saving presets. I have the impression that only 1.25 pages of the manual deal with the radio (sorry, at this stage I haven't read all 160 pages). Am I doing something wrong? I don't seem to have any problems using the iRiver radio functionality and that is what I am doing until I get this problem resolved.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Is it possible that this gobbledigook is the virtual keyboard?
