Formatted Ipod and not ipodpatcher can't find it

I formatted by Ipod 4G this morning and not I want to put rockbox back on it but the ipod patcher doesn't recognize it.

I know I formatted using fat32.  Do I need to use iTunes to reconfigure the ipod first?  I was hoping I could skip all of that and just format it, load Rockbox and be on my merry way.  I really don't want to use iTunes at all.

Does it appear as a drive on your PC ?

Did you repartition it or anything else first ?

It does show up as a drive when connected via usb and I didn't do anything but format the drive.

I fixed it.  I formatted it and then ran ipodupdater from Apples website.  That reflashed the memory and then ipodpatcher found it
