USB connection and battery charging
« on: August 13, 2007, 06:05:40 PM »
Hi all :)

I have a Cowon iAudio X5V, and as far as I know it has two ways of connecting thru USB: the "native" one and the "rockbox" one. I have a question related to this.

When I say "native" I mean the connection that happens when the player is turned off and the USB cable is then plugged. This is probably in ROM, and I don't think the player is able to charge the battery from the USB port in this case.

The other way, the "rockbox" way, is the connection when the player is turned on and running rockbox. Then, if I plug the USB cable, the player enters in USB mode. I don't know if the player is able to charge from the USB port then, and that's my question: is the DAP able to charge the battery from the USB port if it is connected in "rockbox" mode?

I know that this may be confusing, because I don't know if other players have this... feature? of being able to connect using two different ways.

Thanks a lot in advance :)

These are generally known as Bootloader USB and Rockbox USB

Caveat: I don't own an X5, I have only read the manual/searched etc...

In bootloader mode, as you are operating in Cowon firmware, so the 'charge indicator' light on the top should show whether or not it is charging.

In Rockbox mode...
The Features comparison Wiki page says 'Charge via USB: Yes'
However, this forum post says no.
As does this even older topic
no again...

It sems that it could, but it's not implemented yet :(

Oops O:) Thanks for the info. Much better explained that way :)

I didn't know that, I thought that the only way of charging from USB using "Bootloader USB" was turning off the DAP. I'll keep an eye on the light.

Before asking I did a search and I found the last post you say. Since it was from August 2006, I thought things had changed. And yes, I did read the manual (well, the comparison), but my battery voltage dropped while connected using Rockbox USB, so it didn't seem to charge. That's why I asked, I was confused by the docs. The DAP didn't seem to charge, but then again, I thought that it could be my fault (some obscure config setting I missed, or something like that).

Well, thanks a lot for your help and explanation. I'll take a look at the sources, but I
don't think I can help with this, I'm afraid, because I don't know how the USB hardware present in the iAudio works. I'll keep waiting, that's nothing I can live without :)
