The iPod OF doesn't shut down in the same way. In fact it sleeps for a very considerable period of time before turning the hardware off, and I'm not even sure it turns it all off then. The iPod, more or less, wasn't designed to be shut off.

No you wouldn't, because you can't turn the OF off, you can only put it to sleep.

One more vote for this one--last week I was at home late at night, and I tend not to turn any more lights on than I need to.  I was reading, when all of a sudden a bright light shone from the table, lighting up the ceiling.  It was my girlfriend's Rockboxed 5.5g 80GB iPod Video springing to life after hours of offness.

Yesterday she complained that her iPod was nearly dead after a full charge and somehow booting into the original firmware--she had put the hold switch on for a day trip, and it must've sprung to life.

We haven't done a thing with her iPod except load her music onto it--no settings have changed except for the theme and volume.  Good luck tracking this one down. I eagerly await the bug fix...

Okay people reporting this - we need to start getting a log of the svn numbers that it happens on.

It hasn't happened to me personally now since I loaded my last build on - so it may be a build specific issue.

This is happening to me with SVN build r14712-070915, but it started sometime back in August (don't ask me to recall the SVN build, because for the life of me I can't remember). Yes, I should update, and yes, I tend to be a bit lazy about that.  ;)

r14628-070906, if that helps.  I just downloaded the latest--we'll see what happens.

I've personally had this happen to me - with the hold switch either on or off - it doesn't matter which. The only difference is that with the hold switch on, the bootloader of course loads the Apple firmware, not rockbox, which then goes to sleep, and you have a working ipod when you come back to it in the morning.

i have the same issue, just as you have described. i always flick the hold switch when i turn off my ipod, so when this happens it boots into the OF, and goes to sleep where the battery doenst die fast. interesting though.

linuxstb has a suspicion about the commit which first caused the issue :

Quote
My suspicion is r12522 from February - "Add wake on alarm support for Ipods. Rename HAVE_ALARM_MOD to HAVE_ALARM_RTC since it's not always a mod. Make Ipod PCF driver keep other flags in OOCC1 that have been set instead of overwriting them."

I have just compiled myself a customised build which reverses this change, and will monitor what my ipod does over the next few days / weeks.

In the meantime, is there anyone who remembers categorically that their iPod exhibited this behaviour PRIOR to February's change ?

No, my iPod always behaved itself prior to February's change. It never rebooted into the OF without my knowledge.

preglow has jumped in here and confirmed that that is the commit which likely introduced this behaviour.

So a fix may be in the offing soon.

Quick question to all of you affected people: have you ever used the wake-up alarm functionality in Rockbox? I think we've found a fix for this problem now, but I'm still curious how it actually triggers completely.

I never used the wake-up alarm in Rockbox... never had any need for it.

No need here either--my girlfriend's iPod was doing that within the first week she had it (like, 2 weeks ago) and she hasn't done anything but initialize the database and change the WPS.
