iPod 5.5(80g) & Nano turn themselves on ???
racekites:
Hey guys...
I have rockbox on my 80g 5.5 and my girlfriend also has it on her nano. We have both noticed that quite often we can turn of either ipod and when we come back to it, it has turned itself on.
We both have autoplay at startup enabled within rockbox, so it can be annoying as the battery is typically flat...
Is this an issue with the sleep functionality on the ipod bootloader, as its this that starts rockbox, or could it be something else ??
Sliding the hold usually solves the autostartup issue, however as we are both lazy oafs (particularly my girlfriend) and she is so forgetful we don't remember to slide the slider.... :P
So, any ideas... ??
Cheers

Try harder to remember...? :P
I'm struggling with this a bit.
Do you think it's happening all by itself?
In which case it is a bug and needs to be reported.
Or is it that you both keep pressing the 'Select' button by accident when it's in your pocket/bag etc.?
In which case refer to my first paragraph...

I've personally had this happen to me - with the hold switch either on or off - it doesn't matter which. The only difference is that with the hold switch on, the bootloader of course loads the Apple firmware, not rockbox, which then goes to sleep, and you have a working ipod when you come back to it in the morning.
If you have autoplay on in rockbox, and you haven't got the hold switch on - then chances are your ipod will be extremely flat when you come back to it.
It *is* annoying I agree, but so far we've no clue why this happens.
PS - One thing to check is that you don't have "Alarm wakeup" inadvertently switched on.

hey guys , thanks for the fast response.
Yep, 100% sure that its doing it by itself on both the 80g 5.5 and the nano. We can turn then off, place them on a table (no bags, nothing to bump the buttons etc... ) and they can activate themselves.
The autostart appears to be totally random and alarm wakeup is not on. I've tried to see the conditions which make the ipod turn on, however with all things like this you can sit and watch it for hours, and the second you go and take leak they jump into life.... ::)
As Godeater describes, when the hold is on, it will boot into Apple firmware and as we never use this, it starts the inital user setup) which times out and turns itself off. With hold off and booting into rockbox, autoplay kicks in and you find you have a flat battery...
From my limited understanding of the boot process, isn't it the original Apple bootloader which is used to boot either firmware ??
When any ipod is turned off, is it actually off, or in a deep sleep mode ?
Cheers

I'm also getting this behavior, and I was at a loss as to what it was until I read this.
I know my own Alarm Wakeup is off, and there's that odd day or two that I go to switch on my iPod in the morning, only to find myself staring at the OF. I therefore need to hard reset the iPod with MENU+SELECT.
I was thinking the humorous thought that Steve Jobs may be controlling my iPod through the Force before... :)
