H140 replacement with same recording capabilities
« on: August 06, 2007, 04:35:34 PM »
I dropped my beloved H140 from 2 meters onto tile floor. It still starts and navigates but doesn't play, record or anything anymore. So I am looking into getting a new device.
What's most important for me is that it can record from line in. I do a good deal of mic-recordings plugging my OKM to the line-in. If I understand it correctly the specialty of the H140 is that it provides some voltage to a plugged mic thru the line-in which is why with my H140 I do not need an extra amp for my microphone. Do any of the other DAPs supported by Rockbox meet this requirement?

Have you thought about the H140's counterpart, the H340?

The recording hardware seems quite similar between the two devices to me.

The big difference is that the H300 series doesn't have optical input and output, which some might consider part of the recording capability.

Fortunately the optical in/out is of no importance for me. Actually I had previously already considered switching to the H340 due to the better (color) display and USB host function (although USB host still only works with iriver f/w, if I am not mistaken - but that's ok).
Unfortunately there obviously are no new H340s around. But it is an option - thanks for the hint.

That's the one bad thing about the iriver H100 and H300 models: you have to hit eBay to get one nowadays.

There's really no other target with equivalent recording capabilities that's newer than the H300. The X5 can record, but it has less control over the gain (if I understand correctly) though it may be able to record at twice the sample rate (again if I understand correctly).

The Sansa's recording is rather restricted, and the iPods and H10 have recording functionality but it's not on part with the H100/300 at this time (and I don't even know what limitations/expectations it has).

also, I feel the h1x0 is more easy to find on ebay than h3x0

If it still starts, maybe just the disk is bad? Check the internals for damage and if all looks ok, replace the disk?

Guess I will start hunting for H1xx or H3xx on ebay then.
Thanks for all your input.  :)

FYI, I found an h320 for sale in Belgium for 150 euro
http://www.kapaza.be/Audio/MP3_spelers_iPod/5801842/Iriver_H320.html (sorry it's in Dutch)

There are also three h120 on ebay, search for "iriver iHP120" and sort on price, they are the most expensive items in the list (range 108 - 119 euro)
