It will require that you either have a linux PC to hand, or failing that, a linux live CD you can boot your PC with while you do the fix. Are you interested in this ?

I would- I have a friend who's iPod started having probs. However, I imagine this process involves reloading the dumped firmware so might not work but perhaps I could find a firmware for the proper gen... Where is the guide? I didn't see it in the docs index.
EDIT: Sorry, found it. Should have searched for it. http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodManualRestore
ADD: Are the versions on the firmware page firmware versions or hardware versions? In other words what are the differences between versions and how does one go about choosing between say a 4g 40 gig and 4g 60 gig or are they the same firmware with different partition tables?

To be perfectly honest, I'm not entirely certain how you're supposed to read the version numbers there. However, I can tell you there's no difference in the firmwares for a specific model that are affected by the disk size. When I did this process some months back I just picked the biggest version number available for my model.
The disk size is handled by the master boot record download that you do from the
IpodConversionToFAT32 page.

Well this is your choice of course. I know I'd rather invest the time myself to see if I could rescue a rather expensive purchase.

Hmm, download, burn a Knoppix CD, take 10 minutes to perform the process versus waste 300 dollars....
