Is a Rogue-like plugin a good idea?
« on: August 06, 2007, 05:47:56 AM »
Hi,

I thought it would be nice to have a version of rogue or it's derivatives on rockbox.
However, I'm not sure if it can be done, and since I don't have the knowhow to make a plugin,
I'm going to have to do a dangerous thing and ask if anyone else might be interested in making one.
First off, the original source. Luckily this isn't hard at all :)

rogue:        http://roguelikes.sauceforge.net/pub/rogue/index.html
nethack:     http://www.nethack.org/v343/download-src.html
slash'em     http://slashem.sourceforge.net/stable.html

The nicest thing would be if it had some version of tile graphics (especially the small tiles), as in slash'em, but the text interface works fine as well. See to the left of the slash'em mainpage for screenshots of different tiletypes:
http://slashem.sourceforge.net/

Of course, the main problem will be the interface. In the original, most actions were done by keyboard input, using a vast amount of keys. An option to do this would be with some kind of menu, but I'm not sure in how far this is feasible.

So, any ideas as to the possibility? And any would-be developers up for the challenge?

btw, yes I know, if I want it in, I should do it myself... it's just that I really don't have the slightest clue how to and I'm prepared to let go of the idea if no one wants to do it.

Actually, rather than a standard "do it yourself", why not the standard "feature requests belong behind the feature request link to the left" ;)

I can't remember from rogue, but nethack uses all the keys on the keyboard, in both shifted and un-shifted form. How on earth you're going to implement that on a six button DAP will be quite a challenge I think. You'd have to have some huge-ass menus in the game to allow for all options...

Yeah could have forseen that one >.< I just didn't want to make it a real request just yet, if there was no one interested or there would be some problems that immediately kill the idea, like what GodEater said.. I kinda forgot it used shifted keys as well, which makes a very long scroll list :p
Besides, the forum rules clearly state, and I quote:
"Any problems you have with viewers or plugins, or ideas you have for new ones can be discussed here."
Which would make this a discussion, not an actual request :)

*whew talked my way out of that one*

Anyway I remember seeing some menu driven input in slash'EM, but can't really remember the size of the menus, or even what they did and didn't contain.

If we're gonna pull quotes,

Sounds like a request to me. ;)

You could always make a simpler random-dungeon hack 'n slash, built from the ground up (or some other simpler open-source game), both as a way of learning to make plugins and as an alternative.

That actually sounds kind of fun, but rogue was the only game with a relatively simple interface i could think of:p And then there's the "AAAHH HOW HE **** AM I GOING TO DO THAT" going through my head right now
