ipod not found boot loader install!!

i have read the directions for install but i get an error on the boot loader install
it says it cant find an ipod. im in disk mode but it still doesnt work. i just reformated my ipod and was wondering if you need the ipod bootloader or if you can just run rockbox and make it p and p?

please reply with all haste im at a lost with out it ^.^ school starts soon

You need the bootloader. The manual clearly tells this. If you had it installed previously it's possible it is still installed, but that depends on the way you restored your Ipod. Reinstalling the bootloader doesn't harm.
