Wonderful.  A quick and painless fix, thanks for the input.  I'll just have a bottom out config file for when it gets too loud and adjust from there.  Guess I could look into replaygain to keep the volume level.

Still though I'll keep on the lookout for info on how to edit and recompile the source code if I feel up to tackling the problem further.
