If there were three bets, for $1 each, then $2 is owed one way, and $1 owed the other way, coming out to a sum of $1.

Actually, no.  Soap made the bet, I didn't.  He owes me $2, but Soap owes him $1.

Soap merely said to make the check payable to Scorche, I assumed that was for the cumulative value of the bets. This teaches me not to make assumptions.
