getting the right timing on disk mode

i tried to put the ipod into disk mode but i always get it in the wrong timing how can u tell by putting the ipod into diskmode? do u do it after the apple logo or b4?

Switch HOLD on then off
Menu + Select until the screen goes off or flickers, then immediately
Select + Play
