Rockboy
« on: July 26, 2007, 04:50:29 PM »
I have a Sansa e250 and i installed rockbox 2 days ago, yestersay i tries Rockboy and played Pokemon Silver, but the speed is so slow with sound i get an avarage of 25-30FPS with frameskip 6, and without sound i got about 50, and ive heard some one playing Pokemon Blue at over 100%.

So, any clue?

And another thing regarding Database, is there any way to make the Database to show filenames on untagged music files instead of ?

Thanks in advace.

Chrisse

EDIT: Thanks for moving, didn't know where to post.

EDIT2: Also Tested Pokemon Blue, wich is a Gameboy game and not GameboyColor, with about the same FPS as result.

try re-installing rockbox and then try putting the game back on. it sounds like you messed with something by accident.

You mean Re-Installing by delete and Re-copy the files or by Re-patching, if Re-copy, ive done that, tested Pokemon Silver on oficial clean copy of RockBox and tested Pokemon Silver and blue in cpchan's build, with the results above.

PS: Good to see such a nice and active community and Thanks. :)

There's really a small chance that he messed something up if he did a proper install. The reason that the game is running so slow is that the sansa's cpu is not able to handle the game (running quickly that is) and that the rockboy viewer has not been optimized.

as for your database question: this is not the proper forum to post that question. If you were to re-post in the right forum you might have some success.

To put it mildly, Chrisse, and to also confirm what mschneider said...

Unless you're using a DAP like a Gigabeat, be prepared to expect poor performance when playing Game Boy Color games on Rockboy.

(Then again, I think even on the Gigabeat the performance still isn't 100%...)

Well, in mpeg fps test the Sansa was the second fastest player and Gigabeat the fastest one, while ipod was lower down´, but when i searched the forums i found this:

Thank's for the help so far.

MPEG playback speed doesn't necessarily gauge the relative speed of the player. The Sansa has the same speed processor as the iPods, for example. But some things take more work, and some things less work, with the other hardware (screen updates, etc).

And has been said, you're more than welcome to optimize the Rockboy code. Things get improved by interested people improving them. If everyone says "I don't have the time to learn how" nothing will ever happen.

Well, if you lok at the topic i posted, his ipod played Pokemon Blue at more than 100%, while mine plays at barely 50%, so isn't it something thats not right, and about the Rockboy Optimition, well, i can't a thing about programming, only gamecoding, and i dont can anything about emulator codes, but when i start at highschool in about a month i will learn about programming, so, i dont know.

Yes, you have one person saying it played at more than 100% speed, with no evidence, and no description of what settings he used (sound on/off, frameskip, screen scaling).

Simply put: If none of you can be bothered to actually work on it, it's not going to get better.

Well, the settings is set to simply said, Maximun performence, no sound, scaled to original size, frameskip 6 etc, And for them programming thing, i dont really understand why no one is interested in making Rockboy better, since its according to me one of the best features in Rockbox, wich make's makes the ability to play more than 1000 diffrent games on you'r DAP, and ofcourse you will need some programming skills to make it, but there's many good and skilled programmers out there who could make the Rockboy better :)

Anyway, Thanks for the help all, and what i see now is that i can't do anything about it untill someone upgrades it.

Thanks, Chrisse

1.  Your statement that "no one is interested in making Rockboy better" is flat out wrong.  At least one developer has been working on Rockboy, and there have been improvements made to it as recently as last week.

2.  That said, developers work on what they want to work on.  Rockbox is, first and foremost, a firmware for audio players.  Most developers would not categorize Rockboy as one of the "best features in Rockbox" (many would not even categorize it as a useful feature) so they work on other things.  And I for one am very happy about that.

I'm really interested to learn how to develop rockboy code. Developing emulators is something I want to do. The problem is just I ever thought emulator programming was reserved to some elite who really understands reverse-engineering and kicks asses in normal programming. Instead of this, I suck in C :P
