[Solved] worse than last time :( iPod 5G problem
« on: July 25, 2007, 04:12:40 PM »
EDIT: I'm sorry, I just realized I have posted this in the wrong forum, but it won't let me delete it.

I have a 60gb iPod video, I've been using rockbox for quite a while now. Often... Frequently, the iPod refuses to turn on. I'm aware this is common and am used to it, but usually I can turn it on again by holding menu+select at the same time for a few seconds, a few times if the first one didn't work, or I can reset the ipod(hold on, hold off, press+hold menu, press+hold select. both held for 10-30 seconds).

This time, It won't turn on at all, even with repeated cycles of the two combinations above, sometimes held for a minute. This happened once before, but then the iPod started working after I connected it to the computer and tried them again. This time, even that isn't working.

The battery is at least 65%, it was last time I checked, and the iPod hasn't been used since then. I don't remember what build I am using, and the data for it was on the iPod itself, but I doubt that makes a difference since the same thing happened across several builds.

The iPod is unresponsive as far as I can tell, and won't react to being connected at all. It won't even show the low battery indicator.

I'm still hoping for it somehow miraculously working after I leave it alone for a while (it's happened before *shrugs*) but would like to know if there's something I can do for it.

Thank you

Sometimes with my 80GB the battery drains with this problem, you should try to charge it anyway.

When I first installed Rockbox on my Gigabeat there was a bug in which it would hang during shutdown.  The LCD would turn off, but the unit would not power down.  Holding the power button to turn it on would not work and it was necessary to disconnect the battery to do a hard reset(luckily the Gigabeat has a switch on the outside of the player to allow this easily).

I have no idea if this is related or not -- and I was under the impression that Menu + Select always worked for resetting the iPod.  Although the variability in the amount of time it takes for this key combo to initiate a reset makes me doubt that it's fully hardware driven.

If nothing else works it might be worth a try to open the player and disconnect and reconnect the battery.  But try other avenues first.

@a1titude

The battery was at 65%. Anyways, I HIGHLY doubt it was a problem with the battery itself, the connection as Chronon says seems much more likely. Besides, the battery won't charge anyways. If it was charging, it would mean my problem is fixed ^^.

@Chronon.
Thanks, that's helpful. I'm going to the apple store today and see if maybe one of their higher voltage chargers can't wake it up. If that doesn't work I'll try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

How do you know that the battery won't charge?  If the battery is very low, it sometimes may not display anything on the screen until it reaches a certain threshold charge level.  It is worth trying to charge it for a couple of hours and then try the reset procedure (turn the "hold" switch on and the off again, and then press and hold Menu and Select simultaneously).

Mostly from experience. Thanks all for your help, but I've got it fixed. As I thought, using the charger from the apple store worked, on the first try too.
