iRiver H340 keeps forgetting settings...
« on: July 25, 2007, 07:04:58 AM »
Hi everyone!

I have been running Rockbox on my iRiver H340 for a long time without any problems. Recently, my device keeps forgetting its settings, tho.

I once turned it on and the colors where black on white - while I had them set to be white on black. I went through the settings and saw that everything had been reset. I put everything back to how I want it, and the next time I booted up everything was reset again.

Now it's always like that. No matter what I do, my iRiver keeps forgetting the settings. The only thing that it remembers is the song that is playing at the time of shutdown.

What could the problem be? Is there a battery inside that could be empty (and can be exchanged?!) or could it be a software problem?

Thanks for any hints,
Cheers

Probably your default config.cfg file has become corrupted. Delete that file (in /.rockbox) and try again.

Thanks for your idea, but it didn't work. Deleted config.cfg, changed display background color to blue, shut down, restarted, color was back to black and white again. :(

Did Rockbox automatically write another config file after that experiment? If so, paste it here and I'll have a look

Also, what build are you running (check the revision number at boot or in System > Version)? I think there was a bug with saving settings a week or two ago.

The version is r12955-070329, but that hasn't changed in months - the problem with the forgotten settings emerged without any software changes...

Here's the newly created config file:

# .cfg file created by rockbox
r12955-070329 -
http://www.rockbox.org

show files: all

Nothing too special there... The "show files: all" comes from me, cause I don't have a USB-cable with me right now and had to modify that setting in order to navigate to the rockbox directory.

Hmmm, mysterious.

If the config files shows your recent Show Files change, why would it not save the others, also?

The only thing I can suggest at the moment is the following steps:

Start the player
Reset all settings (Settings > Manage Settings > Reset Settings)
Properly shutdown the player
Start the player and check that it is still at defaults (play a file and check the WPS)
Change one obvious setting
Properly shutdown the player
Start the player and check that the setting has stuck

Post the config file contents again. I know all the above is obvious if you are a long time user, but something weird is going on.

just as an idea, maybe there is something wrong with the filesystem? chkdsk /f might help (and if not it won't harm your player, so it's safe to simply try it)

Woohoo it seems to be ok again!

I think this was a good idea:

Quote from: bascule on July 25, 2007, 09:42:59 AM
Reset all settings (Settings > Manage Settings > Reset Settings)
Properly shutdown the player

Well, thanks for your help guys! I'll come back if the problem comes back.

And I will also check the harddisk when I'm home, so that I can maybe see where the error came from in the first place... Cause I didn't change anything when it suddenly happened for the first time.

Thanks, anyway! Have a nice day

Go ahead in the defragment it while you're at it.
