H140: Only starts using reset button => no rockbox boot :-(
« on: July 24, 2007, 06:24:13 PM »
It is entirely possible that there was a better place to post this - I'm sure someone will put me straight if this is the case.

The problem. My H140 had survived a couple of serious falls, but I'd by and large looked after it until 10 days ago when I managed to leave it on the car roof. Priority was getting youngest daughter out of the car and onto the toilet! Anyway, the device (off at the time) sat out on top of the car... and it rained - not a monsoon, but persistent English rain.

OK I thought, no problem, the silicon skin will have kept the worst of the water out. Just be patient and let it dry...So I left it for a few hours in a warm dry place. Then when I switched on (usual play button procedure) it complained about no battery charge. No problem - must still be wet. Wait a bit longer - try charging...

Now, ten days on, everything must be dry.

The problem is that the only way I can get my unit to start is by pressing the reset button. Generally I have to press the reset button twice, but the iriver starts without problems, sees the drive, all my files are visible, it plays, USB works, almost everything is fine and dandy. Except - the play/pause button does nothing to wake up my iriver!

A trip to Halfords for a torx set and several hours careful inspection and I'm still none the wiser. Several trawls of the net have found plenty of helpful information, but no specific lead on my problem. I've tried re-flashing the Rockbox version of the firmware.

I guess I'm really looking for a simple set of steps to trace the specific circuit that should enable the pause/play button to kick the iriver into life.

I should add that the REC button doesn't do anything either. Same goes for the buttons on the remote. I should just confirm that all the buttons work fine once the reset button has been used to get it started (both remote and main unit).

Having written all that, it almost seems like such a picky point, but I don't fancy needing to insert a sharp object into it to get it working every time. And of course Rockbox is beyond me, as the reset button forces me into the iRiver native firmware every time.

So, fingers crossed that someone has blazed this trail already and knows the circuitry linked to getting the H140 started via the pause/play button.

UPDATE

;D Three days more in the sun room and my iRiver works! Now rebuilt and booting into Rockbox. So that was 2 weeks from rain-soaked to dry and working. Patience is a virtue ( which would have saved me an awful lot of pocking about inside my iRiver  ;) ) !
