rockbox questions
« on: July 24, 2007, 04:20:51 PM »
i have a couple of questions about rockbox.  i have a 5g 30gb ipod

first of, exactly how do you turn the ipod on?  i turn it off by holding the play/pause button.  but when i wanna turn it on, i cant figure out which button works

i managed to turn it on using a combination of the menu or select buttons (pressing one, pressing both, holding one, etc..), but what is the proper way of doing this?

next question is, if rockbox froze my ipod, what's the proper way of resetting it?  i always just use the menu+select, just wondering if this is right

3rd question is, sometimes when i listen the music suddenly turns to a high pitch static sound.  play/pause/skip doesnt do anything, all songs are now static.  i then have to turn it off, then on again to get it to play songs again

4th question, is rockbox harmful fo my ipod?

5th:  do i still need to update my ipod using itunes?  if so, does that overwrite/delte the rockbox loader?

6th:  any suggestions on how i could get the battery to last longer?

last question, what's the difference between a daily build and a current build?  which one should i go with? (i think i have a daily build right now)

sorry for all the questions, hope you guys can clear some stuff up.  thanks

The Select button should turn the iPod on.  Occasionally there is a glitch, which we believed to be caused by the Apple firmware, which requires you to reset the player by pressing and holding the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously.

Yes.

What build are you using?

No

5th:  do i still need to update my ipod using itunes?  if so, does that overwrite/delte the rockbox loader?

By "update," do you mean update the Apple firmware, or update the music on your player.

If you mean update the Apple firmware, that will replace the Rockbox bootloader and you will need to reinstall it using the installation instructions in the manual.

If you mean update the music on the player, no, Rockbox does not need to be synced with iTunes.  You can simply drag and drop music onto the player.  Rockbox will recognize the music that iTunes puts on your player, but you will need to use Rockbox's database to browse effectively.

6th:  any suggestions on how i could get the battery to last longer?

Use a screen without peakmeters and turn off the EQ.

last question, what's the difference between a daily build and a current build?  which one should i go with? (i think i have a daily build right now)

I believe that this is explained in Chapter 2 of the manual.  Current builds are generated automatically every time someone commits a change to the Rockbox source code.  Daily builds are generated automatically at a set time once a day.

^ exactly what i'm looking for, thanks

about the high pitch static question, i'm not sure what build i have, but i'm pretty sure it's a daily build cause i waited 2 mins for the build to come out  :D

i'll try updating to a new build to see if that fixes the problem.

about the battery optimization question, is there a list or something of rockbox features that shows which ones use up a lot of power?

also, if i disable the options in the regular ipod settings, would that have an effect?

new question:  how do you mute rockbox?  on ipods, turning the wheel all the way mutes it, but on rockbox, it just stops to a certain volume

No, though offhand I think EQ is one of the worst.

No, rockbox doesn't interact with Apple's firmware in anyway.  The only thing used is the USB mode (and soon that won't even be necessary).  I think you can actually uninstall the Apple software if you really want.

Well, the other way is to submit a patch to us properly implementing mute on these devices. We do welcome all contributions as this is a community project.

I suggest you start a new thread in the Audio Playback forum, because that is not an installation-related question.  Please use a descriptive title for the new thread, and also make sure that you specify (1) the revision number of the build you are using (you can see this under the Rockbox logo when your player boots), (2) the circumstances under which you experience the problem, and (3) how to replicate the problem.
