Hidden files in my songs directory (using a Mac)
« on: July 24, 2007, 11:21:05 AM »
I did some searching and couldn't find anything similar...

For some reason when I load songs up to my player, I am getting a 2nd file for each song file with a "._" prepended to the file name.

I can't see them in the DIRECTORY but I CAN see them in the playlist.  It's also causing problems with the Directory Buffer filling up even though I've got less than 1000 songs in that file and have the max directory value set to 1000 (the directory shows 9xx songs but there are actually 18xx files in the directory)...

Any way this can be prevented?  And I really don't have the option to use a PC for this...

I know that I can use certain programs on a Mac that will enable me to see hidden files but I'd like to not have to clean up my directories every time I add music.

Thanks.

Those "._" files represent resource forks, and are a hangover from pre-OSX days. They don't store anything of interest for music files, and they're certainly no use to Rockbox.

The Disktidy plug-in will remove them from your music player, but you'll have to run it after every file transfer. (And just plugging into the Mac will give you .DS_Store files in every directory you open in Mac OS.)

There's a shareware utility called BlueHarvest , which prevents the OS from writing those files (and other Mac-specific hidden files) to non-HFS disks. (Or, more correctly, it deletes them after the OS has written them.)

Well I'm running OSX 10.3.9 and it's still putting them on my rockbox...

The only time I see them btw is when I insert a directory into a playlist... the one time I saw them was when I used the insert shuffle function.

The automatic playlist generator doesn't include these...

I'll check those apps.

Thanks.

EDIT:

Blue Harvest rocks.

Thanks alot.

Will definitely send the $10 for this application.
