my archos jukebox recorder v2 hdd might be broken
« on: July 24, 2007, 09:51:46 AM »
when i power on my jukebox recorder v2 with 20gb hdd, it makes really fast, loud clicking sounds forever.  the rockbox splash screen stays on.  nothing else happens.
the battery is fully charged.  does that mean the hdd is dead?

From the way you described it, I think it's mostly likely.

This page describes how to open up your Archos Recorder so you
can replace the drive:

http://www.mctubster.com/hd.html

Remember that you'll need a 2.5" hard drive for replacement; a laptop hard drive works for this case. The tools needed are listed on the page, and also note that even though he shows the Archos Player/Studio, the process is still the same.

This can also happen if the battery connectors need to be re-soldered (this is the solution to most of the Archos issues.)

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ArchosRepairBattery will go into a bit more detail about it.  Sometimes you will see the fracture, other times, you won't.  It is really tough to say until your just go ahead and fix them.  Also, sometimes you are able to squeeze the bumpers in such a way that the device will work.  This will confirm this.

I have 3 Archos' and all 3 of them currently have this problem and are awaiting me to get a new soldering iron/station.

The V2 recorder is quite different from the player/studio.  It's quite similar to the Multimedia Jukebox so I suggest this guide: http://www.angelfire.com/trek/archos/disassembly.htm
Note that you need to desolder the metal back from the circuit board to take out the hard drive.

The battery situation is also quite different because instead of the AA NiMH you have an internal LiIon battery.  However you also get battery contact problems.  If you open up your device make sure you clean the contacts before reassembling.
