iriver H1xx "scanning disk"
« on: July 24, 2007, 09:46:27 AM »
hello!

today i listened to some music, stopped playback, turned the payer off, turned it on again and then rockbox was "scanning disk". i mean.. it didnt take too long, actually..
but what kind of rule is there in disk scanning?
something like "every third time on boot" ? or is there a setting for this?

I get this on my iPod as well. Seems to mostly happen after I connect it to my PC to transfer files to it.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts taking far too long to complete.

if you have directory caching set to "on", it will do this after a USB connection to see if files have changed.

You can turn it off, but it will make file browsing more sluggish.

Menu>Settings>General Settings>System>Disk>Directory Cache

I have the same "problem" on my 5.5g Ipod.  I asked about it right here:

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=11592.0

I still haven't found out what's making it do this.  It still scans disk without exception ever other time I turn the player on, even without having connected it to a PC.

I also have an H140 and have never had this issue with dircache enabled.  For my H140 to scan the disk is a VERY rare occurance.   The build on that player though is roughly a year old...

One new thing I've noticed in regards to this issue, is that sometimes it appears that dircache isn't even working (i.e. when i hit select to browse my files the disk spins up) when I know for certain dircache is in fact enabled.  It is good to hear though that others are having a similar issue.

squidkidd, you don't need to jump in every time this topic comes up. I told you the situation is different with iPods than with the iRiver HXXX series because every time you turn it off, we can't know what happens before it comes back on.

It has to assume you might've hooked up USB for the iPod, and it's more astonishing that it's not scanning every time.

nice discussion, guys.....

unfortunately, it didnt help me yet....

so, we all agree that scanning after turnig it off and on again
(WITHOUT plugging it into usb) doesnt make sense, right? ok, maybe
if somethings been deleted or renamed by rockbox... but i didnt.

again the question for the developers: is there a rule?
(e.g. "scan disk on every 5th boot"?)

Try doing a clean install with the latest build, see if that helps.

While we always recommend this for bug hunting, I'd also try making sure all your configs are backed up, and then resetting back to defaults (can't remember off the top of my head what the key press is to do this on the iriver is - but it'll be in the manual somewhere). Once you done that - turn the dircache option back on again and see if the problem persists.

Hold record after it starts booting (do it too early and you will get the OF).

No, and I can't see anyone suggesting that either.

I had a similar "scanning disk" issue - I had to revert to a 13th July build.  I got bored with that, so did a complete wipe (saving the config file), and re-installed latest build.  Now it works fine.
Rockbox flashed on H140 modded to 80Gb running from ROM BTW.
