It probably wouldn't do any good, since my iPod is working just fine now.

I have no idea what caused the problems, but everything seems to be in order. An hour or so ago I tried playback again, and it worked, so I rebooted and tried again, and to my amazement, it still worked. So, I put my music back onto the iPod and went to do some shopping. I noticed considerable amounts of distortion (caused by the decoder? volume level did not affect the distortion), which went away with a reboot. For some 15 minutes after that there were significant amounts of MPEG stream artifacts (blips etc), but no crashes, and even the artifacts disappeared over time.

I really don't know what to say... perhaps the flash disk is starting to show its age?
