The way scrolling works in stock ipod firmware is really nice. It seems like rockbox can only scroll at a fixed speed, which would be a dealkiller for me since I have so much music.

There is a form of scrolling acceleration in Rockbox.  Look for the settings in the settings menu--off the top of my head, I don't remember where.  It's a relatively new feature and may not yet be documented in the manual.

--- Quote ---Is there a way to switch from pulling song data from file names to pulling data from ID3 tags? My music is really well organized as far as folders and subdirectories go, but my filenames aren't really tagged properly, and it'd take ages to do. Since everything else just pulls data from ID3 tags, I'd be taking on a huge porject just for rockbox. Ideally, rockbox would pull data from ID3 tags, unless there are no ID3 tags, in which case it'd default to filename.

To answer your question directly, Rockbox's database feature (described in the manual) allows you to browse by tags.  Rockbox's While-Playing-Screen (also described in the manual) is fully configurable, and can be set to display tag information if available, or to default to file path information if there is no tag information available.  Many of the available themes take advantage of this capability.

As a side note, if your music is truly well organized in folders and subdirectories, you can use a tagging program like mp3tag, Tag and Rename, or any of about a thousand others to populate your filename tag based on the track tag.

--- Quote ---Are there any hard numbers as to the reduction in battery life? I read it's something along the lines of 50%, but I'd like to see tests and statistics and such.

--- Quote ---Does rockbox effect sound quality at all? I'm guessing that's a hardware thing, but I figure I should check.
