Undocumented Problem with Rockbox
«

Hello all, I have a unique problem with rockbox on my x5. I have not been able to update rockbox since july of 2006, because when i do i get this screen (shown in attachment). The player will not go past this screen, it just hangs. I've tried numerous builds, wiping the drive clean, and reflashing. Does anyone have any idea how I can salvage my player, (as I have lost the build I used to revert to) after my last attempt to update? This is a last ditch effort before I buy a new player...(one that I can use rockbox with, of course).
Thanks for any help.

The bootscreen on the picture doesn't look like an official one - it shows a logo I've seen in the logo thread and probably was used by an unofficial build and (or) bootloader. Where do you have them from?
Did you try the official and hence supported installation as described in the manual with flashing the official bootloader and build? I can imagine that you wanted to get dual boot working but maybe this bootloader (or build) has a flaw the official one does not have?
If it still hangs (on the official rockbox bootscreen) then there might be someone around here who can help you by looking at the official sources...

Well I tried installing exactly as prescribed in the manual, just for a last shot, and got much the same results. I used todays daily build (7/23), the bootloader found on the iAudioBoot page, not any kind of dual boot firmware, and I still get the hanging screen on my startup. I'm puzzled. Any ideas? Sorry about camera quality, I can take a better pic later if necessary.

Out of curiosity, did the manual link to the iAudioboot page, or did you simply choose to ignore the manual and pick a different bootloader anyway?
Also, do July '06 builds of Rockbox work, then?

I used the bootloader linked from the the manual yes, found at:
http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iaudio/
No, I can no longer make the build I had saved from July '06 work now either. It hangs the same.

That's weird...
Just to check because you didn't say which one of the two bootloaders on that site you use:
are you sure you took the correct one (for the "complete" X5 with radio - or the X5V without the radio)?
And what happens if you try to install the original firmware again?
(These are the only ideas that come to my mind right now.

I am absolutely sure I used the correct bootloader, the regular x5 one, not x5v. The funny thing is the OF works fine when I flash it back, but I'm so accustomed to rockbox I may still buy a new player to keep it...

I'm not sure what exactly is going on but just had one other idea when reading the original post again, that I want to throw out.
You said you were "wiping the drive clean"... how did you do that? If you have repartitioned it, maybe you chose a wrong filesystem (or it went wrong some other way, got corrupted)? I could even imagine that the original firmware is able to work with a different one but Rockbox only works with a FAT-32 filesystem on X5.

I did repartition it as a fat32 drive, with default allocation, so this is not the problem either. I fixed my problem though. I just switched my x5's HD with my little brother's x5 (he uses the original firmware) and everything is now peachy. This leaves me to assume something went wrong when I was flashing it or something, as the hard drive is now ruled out as an issue. I may still try to tackle this again later, but problem
avoided
for now.

Wait, if switching the hard drive fixed your problem, doesn't that
confirm
that the hard drive was the issue?

I would think so too, especially because you said that the original firmware can also handle that drive in your X5...

I'm sorry, I was unclear in my last post. I had my little bro's x5 20 gb, and my x5 30 gb. he ran the original firmware, I ran rockbox. I flashed both to the original firmware before I switched their drives. I switched the 20gb drive into the 30gb shell and the 30 gb drive into the 20 gb shell. (only parts moved were the drives). I then flashed the 30gb drive in 20 gb shell to rockbox and it works just fine, proving it is indeed NOT the hard drive that is the issue. I get the same screwed up splash screen when trying to start rockbox with the 20gb drive in the 30 gb shell. Again, sorry about the confusion.
