Loving RockBox but need some help
« on: July 18, 2007, 03:42:26 PM »
ok, i failed in installation the first time but now i got it installed and i am loving the plethora of extra features!! truly is amazing..

however, a couple problems (quite critical) have risen and i fear i may have to go back to the old firmware  :(

i have an iPod Video 30GB
i used the current build rockbox, installed the latest font pack as well as some custom themes.

* i have some playlists that I already made in itunes. How can i get these playlists into rockbox?? (if possible)

* more importantly, rockbox seems not to recognize some of the genres i have in itunes. This is a HUGE problem. It is recognizing some but not all. It is marking these songs as having the genre "untagged" on my ipod. It is over 2000 songs in 3 different genres, so it will be very difficult to rename all. Does rockbox only recognize conventional genres (rock, jazz e.t.c)? I need a fix for this badly.

please, any help is appreciated.

Check using foobar or some other app that one of these genreless files actually has a genre tag.

ok...

i am using a mac, and all my songs in my itunes are in aac format..

at first i thought it was that, but it cannot be, since all the other songs are in that format yet their genre's got recognized by the rockbox

i took some of the aac files, transferred it to my pc, downloaded foobar and got the tag information....all the information is there...

right now, i went into itunes, selected all my music and selected "Convert ID3 tags"....converted all to ID3v2.3 as this was recommended on quite a few sites i've read..

i've updated the ipod but still no luck with recognizing of some of the genres......

i hope there's more help to get....i want to use rockbox!

I really can't see why these problems should be critical ...

Rockbox uses standard m3u playlists. You need to convert those playlists with an external tool. No idea what tools are available on the web for macs to do this task. There was also a plugin in the tracker for accessing those playlists but I don't think it works any more. Someone in the forums showed interest creating a conversion plugin a couple of days ago.

If these files don't have the tags added (itunes seems to like writing data only into its own database instead of the files' tags) you need a tool to fix this. That's nothing Rockbox can do anything about as Rockbox doesn't use (and will not use) the itunes database. If the tags are present more details would be interesting.

i couldn't see the id3 tags on my mac, so i transferred a couple of the files from my mac to my pc. Used foobar and saw that the files did have the correct tags.

The strange thing to me is that all my songs with conventional genres (rock, jazz) have their tags in rockbox, yet my songs with unconventional genres (oldies, dancehall) shows up as "untagged"

what "more details" would you like to know??

download TagScannerhttp://www.download.com/3000-2141_4-10702609.html and check and see if the files actually have the information written into their ID3 tags. TagScanner is the best ID3 Editor I have found so far.

nothing is wrong the songs' tags...
they've all been converted to ID3v2.3 and verifyed in foobar and all have the correct tags with all the information

 :(

now i think i'm getting to where the problem is...
i went over the manual and i didn't do this feature:

Settings → General Settings → System → Limits

and with the default being 1000, maybe all the other songs id3 info doesn't load into the database..

here's the new problem; when i do this and change the limit to 10,000, when i reboot the ipod (menu + select) , the setting does not save and reverts to the 1000..

edit: when i reboot, all my settings are reverted to the original settings

when i reboot the ipod (menu + select) , the setting does not save and reverts to the 1000..

It won't save, because that is NOT the way to shut down Rockbox.

On the iPod, you need to do a (very) long hold of the Play button. You should then see the 'Shutting Down...' splash.

This will ensure that all settings are saved.

Check out the manual for this info and more...

Rockbox doesn't read id3v2 tags from AAC files - it reads the native tags which exist within the MP4 container.

You should remove any id3 tags that have been added to your files (maybe foobar can do that, but I don't use it), and check that the actual MP4 tags contain a genre entry.

If they do, then it would be helpful if you could make such a file available for developers to test and debug - e.g. upload it to a website and post the link here.

It's been made clear that rockbox will not support itunes or the ipod firmware directly, so you need to rely on third party software to create m3u manually.

mp3tag can adjust tags and strip different versions

I'm not aware of any documentation on the tags written by iTunes, so it is entirely possible the genre reading code doesn't handle your files correctly. The current implementation is based on looking at files in a hex editor. Not the most reliably way of doing things...

As linuxstb said, a test file could be very helpful. However, it is possible I've found the reason, after some experimenting with MP3Tag. I'll try to get a fix into the next daily build.

By the way, the Limits setting is completely irrelevant to this.
