iPod not powering on
« on: July 18, 2007, 12:39:20 AM »
ok...

i've read some other threads and this seems to be a common problem. My situation is slightly different however.

* I have a iPod 30gb Video that was formatted for mac
* I hooked it up to my pc and reformatted to fat32
* I re-connected it to my mac and followed the directions (disk utility->unmount).
* I forgot to unzip the rockbox.zip file into the root folder
* I ran the iPodpatcher.dmg
* About half-way through, i realized that i did not unzip the rockbox.zip file and cancelled/stopped the ipodpatcher program.
* Since then, my iPod is in the start-up dark screen with the dark apple logo and i can hear the hard drive "clicking" every 10-15 sec.
* When i try to connect it to my pc or mac, it doesn't show up as an external device.

- firstly, my ipod was FULLY CHARGED before all this happened.
- YES, i have it charged in a wall charger for over 24 hours.
- YES, i have tried hard resetting (Menu + Select) multiple times.
- NO, I did not drop my ipod.

Does anyone have any other ideas??

At a guess you've broken the filesystem on the drive in some way by aborting the ipodpatcher process. If there's no documentation that says "do not abort the ipodpatcher process" then there probably should be as it's a dangerous thing to do.

Anyway, maybe this Apple documentation will help:

It's a little odd that you managed to find the time to stop ipodpatcher - it doesn't take long to run really. Even so - you've probably managed to break the contents of the first partition, where the apple firmware lives.

In order to mend it the best thing to do is to put it into disk mode (see the top thread in this forum), and then connect it to your PC and do an iTunes restore. Ideally of course this should be a PC if you wish it to be formatted for windows (and hence work with Rockbox), otherwise you'll have to do the manual restore process.

For future reference, it's not worth stopping ipodpatcher if you've forgotten to unzip rockbox.zip first - you can simply do it afterwards - but it's best not to disconnect the ipod inbetween the two processes, or you'll be forced to manually set it into disk mode.

Edit:- Sorry, just noticed you're having problems with the hard reset too. Make sure you do it exactly the way Apple say to :

Switch hold to on, then off again and then immediately hold the Menu+Select buttons.
