Can title/artist info in playlist cause a freeze?
« on: July 17, 2007, 11:25:23 PM »
I have an HP 30gig iPod that freezes at random times.  Is it possible that my playlist is causing a freeze because the titles are too long or have illegal characters?  I get the same error when it freezes.  "Undetermined @ 0005D6C."

I have about 3500 songs loaded and I put it on shuffle and sooner than later it will ab-end. Most of the songs were ripped from my CDs with SoundJuicer (GNU/Linux) and then there are some iTunes albums (winXP) that I purchased long ago.

Cheers.

Could you please type the error message exactly as it's written?

Also, what generation iPod is that? Are the HPs 4th Generation? Which SVN version and bootloader version are you running?

As well we ask you not to use the term "brick" unless your device is actually bricked (in a permanent sense).

Thank you.

Error as it is written is:
Undefined instruction
at 00058D6C

Version:  r13899-070715

Model #MP7001 HP iPod Photo 30 Gig is 4th generation.

- - - - -

Sorry about the wrong terminology.  I edited the offending word. I understand what you are saying about that.
When the battery runs out the iPod is useable again.

I have not been happy with it since I bought it and it has been in a drawer for the last year or more.  I read about this Project and when the iPod works under Rockbox I am a happy camper.

Thank you very much for all the work you are doing here.

If you'll notice, third generation iPods aren't listed as supported on the front page of the site. The lack of reliability is to be expected until people who own them do further work on them.

It's not a 3rd Gen Llorean - it's a 4th gen - I just googled on the model number.

He'd said he thought is was a third generation when I made my post. I have to wonder though, which firmware he installed if he thought it was third generation at the time.

I have a 4th gen ipod too (40gb), and I have been getting the "undefined instruction" error too the last few days (weeks?) with the current builds.

see

I put on the latest boot loader to be sure I'm not out of date there, I'll see if it happens again this afternoon.  The only way I know how to get the bootloader is from the download link in the manual.  How can I tell the version number/when it was last updated?

I downloaded the one (picture link) that was mine while I was at home.  When I answered your question I was not at home and should have checked the link and answered your question correctly.  Very bad of me to cause this confusion.  I do apologize.

HP produced this thing but it is not like Apple makes these things themselves in Cuppertino.  They all use the same suppliers.  I was an Apple developer in the '80s in another lifetime before I worked for AOL.  Weird times in those days. I'm a retired hobbiest now.  TMI.  I know.

pondlife

Yesterday, but it did the exact same thing.  I noticed it has ab-ended when it is playing a long song.  It stops about (not exactly sure) 8 minutes into a song over 12 minutes long.  Not the same songs.

I formatted the disk with some forensic software and I will do a fresh install this weekend and load a dozen short songs and give it a try.  If it seems to work.  I'll go for some Pink Floyd and Yanni long cuts and see how that works.

Just trying some S.W.A.G. -ing here to satisfy my curiosity im my old age.
thanks for the response.
Cheers.
