Is it safe to install Rockbox on iPod video (was: Simple question please answer)

(1/1)

mickmos:
even after reading the manual i am still not sure about a few things. When you turn on your ipod with rockbox installed does it give you an option if you would like to run it or does it always use it? The second question is i have an ipod video and i am told that ipodlinux and rockbox do not support ipod videos is it still safe to install them on it? and what is the best ipod to use for ipodlinux and rockbox? The third question is can rockbox break or damage your ipod in anyway and if it does can it be easily fixed?the last question is, is there a nes emulator and how fast does it run? I know these questions would have already been answered somewhere but after reading the manual and searching the posts i couldn't find any answers. If anyone could reply it would be greatly appreated.
Thanks

You can specify which firmware the bootloader runs by pressing a certain key (not sure what it is on ipods but the manual should tell you). If you want a graphical interface look at the IPL bootloader.

The 5g ipod video is supported (as stated on the rockbox homepage), the 80gb Ipod video is not though. So if you have a supported model yes.

If you are using a supported model and follow instructions then no, there should not really be a large risk of rockbox disrupting your player but if something does come up then it depends on the problem as to how easily it can be fixed.

No.

The 80GB ipod video has been supported since the 23 May 2007 - as stated on the rockbox homepage...

OH, didn't see that there... :D

It is worth noting that Rockbox and IpodLInux use the word "supported" differently.
When Rockbox states that player is "unsupported" it means that Rockbox is not made for, and will not run on said player.
When IpodLinux says the 5th generation iPod is "unsupported" they mean "Many things work, but we won't help you."
