MPEG Player Does not show my movie file?
« on: July 17, 2007, 06:12:21 PM »
Hey guys still new to all of this but the MPEG Player will not show my file as soon as I go to the file browser it shows my movie but when I hit play it shows no file.  Any suggestions?  I have read around and found nothing...

1) Please post in the correct forum board.
2) Have you checked the MPEG Player plugin page to make sure that you encoded your file correctly?

I would say that the file somehow does not match the requirements. If you've found it in the browser and it just does not play, then the file is likely faulty.

Did you get any error messages when you 'played' the file?

Hi, in order to play an mpeg file you have to press SELECT instead of PLAY.

Pressing PLAY resumes the last played audiofile. The "no file" in the WPS means that something is wrong with the audiofile it tries to resume and has nothing to do with the video/mpegplugin.

Yeah I know this but I don't understand maybe it is my file type like a regular mpeg 4 file I am thinking that could be it as I see it only plays mpeg 1 and mpeg 2 but movies that I find and convert ALWAYS convert to an mpeg 4 could  someone help me solve this problem?

What, all by themselves? ;)

Use a different converter, specifically I would recommend WinFF as described in the Wiki. It's simple and works a treat.

Thanks bascule I'll try that converter.  Thanks everyone I am still a noob at this stuff so thanks for putting up with my questions you have probably heard 100 times but you got to learn some how I guess...
Thanks!
-Nate

Edit: Whoa I got a video from youtube and converted the .flv to mpeg using the above converter and converter was very basic and easy to understand but when I then take that mpeg file and put it in a fold that I made in the root of my ipod and go to that folder from the file browser there is no file showing up.  What am I doing wrong?

Do you have your file type view set to All, Music or Supported?  If you have it set to Music, a movie won't show up.
Which file extension does your newly created file have?
and...
(to avoid a possible later question)
Does the newly created movie play properly on your PC?

Ok first off I don't quite understand what you mean by "set to all" so if you would not mind rephrasing that, that would be great.  Let me walk you through my steps so maybe I can be more clear and we can get this solved.  I go to youtube and find a video.  I copy the link of my selected video and paste it into vixy.net a video converter that does youtube videos.  I select avi and let that convert.  After that is done I take the avi and put it in the converter described above and select mpeg2 and convert.  I noticed that my avi does not play but my mpeg does but it is crazy pix elated.

1. Go to Settings > General Settings > File View > Show Files and select All

You will now see the file in the folder you made.

2. If you have set up WinFF properly (i.e., followed step 2 of the instructions to replace the presets.xml file) you should not have to select mpeg2.

So fix your WinFF installation, convert another video then let us know the result.

...my mpeg does [play] but it is crazy pixelated.

As you said you can't play it on your device, I presume you mean this is on your PC.

I suspect that re-encoding (generally crappy) YouTube videos twice may have some bearing on this situation...  :P

Well the avi I get before I convert it does not play but when I convert it the mpgeg plays but is very pix elated.  Now I didn't see anything about a .xml setting.  I am sorry to say I am lost on that part.

Well don't convert it to an AVI first. Or if you do, convert it to a very, very high bitrate one. And play them both on your computer. Rockbox doesn't magically make the file more pixellated, so it's simply something you're doing while conversion.

All Rockbox does is play valid mpeg-1/2 files with 44.1khz sound in the right format. Everything else is pretty much up to how you convert it, and quality problems are usually because of the settings you use.

Transcoding reduces quality, and you're doing it multiple times on already low quality files.

No I can't even get them to play on my iPod the avi is showing up pix elated on my computer screen so where do you recommend a video and using the WinFF converter what should I convert it to?  I chose mpeg 2 but the above post says something about .xml???

The AVI isn't *supposed* to play on your iPod. Rockbox doesn't support them. I'm not sure why you keep repeating that it doesn't play, because the wiki makes it perfectly clear that it doesn't.

Please, read the PluginMpegplayer wiki page again, more carefully, it seems to answer several of your questions at once.
