Charging With Rockbox

I'm confused about charging in rockbox.  I have an Ipod video 30gig, and a griffen wall charger.  I understand all charging is done with the hardware and rockbox doesn't alter it at all, but i'm confused on the best route to charge it.

Do i just boot to Rockbox, plug the charger in, and walk away?
       I did this and my idle shutdown (set at 6minutes) kept rebooting my player every ....6 minutes.  But i suspect that my charger might be bad

I usually charge over night while i sleep and the screen is on the entire time, not the backlight, just the text.  Is it bad for the screen to be on the whole time?

I've been booting into the apple firmware and just putting it to sleep.  Is this the best way to charge?  How do you all charge?

Thank you for clearing this up for me, i've been rockboxing for about 2-3 months now and this has been a complete mystery for me.

you can select whether or not rockbox charges during a usb connection (plugging into your charger is recognized as such) in your settings. Refer to the manual for your player for further information.
